The main goal of the department’s activity: to ensure the improvement of  future philologists-orientalists’ general competences as well as  formation of professional competencies which will contribute to the quality linguistic and speech training of bachelor’s and master’s degree holders.

The main tasks of the department: ensuring the high quality of educational services in accordance with the standards of higher education and the organization of the educational process’ regulatory documents; organization of educational, scientific and social humanitarian work on the basis of student-centeredness as a  philosophy of educational activity; introduction of progressive methods and modern information education technologies; improvement of methods for assessing the  educational process quality; publication of teaching  manuals, educational guidances, recommendations, instructions according to the profile of the department; researching   current issues of philology and methods of foreign language teaching at the university with the aim of improving the professional level of both  teachers and students.

The mission of the department: to promote the formation of competences and professional growth of the future specialist and citizen, as well as his worldview, values and self-awareness.

The goals of the department are the following: to ensure the quality of the educational process as well as student-centered learning; to improve   the scientific and pedagogical qualification of teachers; to  implement modern information and communication technologies; to develop   the new educational programs.

Educational activities

In its activities, the department is governed by the Laws of Ukraine “On Education“, “On Higher Education“, the Statute of the “Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University”, the Development Strategy of the “Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University” 2019-2025.

The main areas of the departmentactivities are: educational and methodical work, scientific research work, social and humanitarian work, vocational guidance work and international activities.

The department is a graduationdepartment in  the following areas of training: 035.06 Philology. Language and literature (Chinese) full-time master’s degree.

The department also trains specialists of the bachelor’s degree 035 Philology. Language and literature (Japanese, English). 035 Philology. Language and literature (Chinese, English).

The department also provides teaching of a practical Chinese language course, theory and practice of Chinese language translation, oral two-way translation of the Chinese language, as well as a number of optional educational components for students of the specialty 035.041 “Philology. Germanic languages ​​and literatures (including translation), the first is English. Translation (English and second foreign language (Chinese))”.

All teachers of the department have tools for remote work, including Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Educational Portal, etc.

Under the guidance of the teachers, students work on course and master’s theses and undergo translation and scientific-pedagogical kinds of practices.

Bases of practice: the base of translation practice for bachelor’s degree holders is: the Department of Oriental Languages ​​of  “Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University “; international department of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University and the Ukrainian-Chinese Center for the Development of Culture and Education/Ucce-Centre (hereinafter the Center).

The center provides materials for translation practice and offers students creative tasks; the Language Center “European Choice”, Poltava; “Format Posluga” LLC, Dnipro, “Deluxe-Voyage” LLC (travel agency). The basis of scientific and pedagogical practices for master’s degree holders is the Department of Oriental Languages ​​of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University and educational institutions where master’s students work.

Scientific activityof the department

The Department of Oriental Languages ​​conducts research work according to the general departmental complex scientific topic “Cultures of Peoples whose Languages ​​we Learn”.

The purpose of the study: to select “sets” of national-cultural and behavioral stereotypes that were worked out in the course of the historical development of the speech communities of the People’s Republic of China and Japan, and to use these “sets” in the educational process for the purpose of forming the professional competences. State registration number of the scientific topic: 0106U008125. Date of registration: 20-06-2018.

Over the years, the work of the department is also carried out within the scope of the following scientific topics: “Modern educational technologies in methodical preparation of philology students for intercultural communication”; “Innovations in linguistic multicultural education”; “Formation of multicultural tolerance in the process of learning foreign languages ​​at universities: the experience of Ukraine and Eastern countries.”

In recent years (2016-2023), eight international scientific and practical conferences “Ukraine-China: Dialogue of Cultures” and “Modern Trends in Oriental Studies” have been held. At theonline conference in 2020, scientists from such countries as China, Poland, Germany, Malaysia, Turkey, Jordan, and Iraq presented the results of their research. In 2023, leading scientists, university teachers from Poland, the People’s Republic of China, Turkey, Peru, Great Britain and the United States of America took part in the department’s international conferences, united under the name “Dialogue of Cultures in Difficult Times” (http ://luguniv.edu.ua/?p=98107).

The conferences are unique platforms for the exchange of opinions and the formation of a modern scientific discourse of oriental studies.Teachers, students and foreign scientists invited to the conference, have an opportunity to exchange opinions, information, and negotiate directions for cooperation. The leitmotif of the scientific reports and talks at the conferences was the conviction that the experiences of dynamic changes in the People’s Republic of China, Japan and other countries arebecoming importantissues of empirical material for Ukrainian intellectuals.

The teachers of the department actively involve students in scientific and research work. This resultsin numerous students’ publications of articles and theses in the collections of materials of these conferences. These materials can be found in the digital repository on the university website::

The priority tasks of the department’s research work are:

  • participation of teachers, graduate students, master’s students and students of the department in international and all-Ukrainian scientific and scientific-practical conferences, symposia, seminars, round tables on problems of philology, linguistics and methods of teaching foreign languages;
  • publication of research results in scientific and professional publications;
  • increasing the scientific potential of the department, encouraging the department’s teachers to write and defend candidate and doctoral theses.

International relations and academic mobility

The teachers of the department study the experience of universities and Oriental studies centers of European countries and the USA (for example, INALCO University of Languages ​​and Civilizations – Institute national des langues et civilizations orientales, France; University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland; University of Turku and Finland, which teach and research oriental languages. The department organizes international events. At one of the meetings of the Youth Club of Eastern Cultures, which was held online, the topic “How different cultures react to the COVID-19 pandemic” was discussed (https://luguniv.edu.ua/?p=57593).

Conferences and seminars are held with the participation of scientists from China, Japan and other countries. The department invites scientists in the field of philology to hold lectures for students. In March 2021, a lecture on the topic “Communication as the main communicative process”, which corresponds to the content of the academic disciplines “Communicative strategies (Chinese language)” and “Culture and communication”, was delivered by associate professor of the department Y. Malakhova and her colleague, Associate Professor Cheng Hong from Hebei Pedagogical University, China.

As part of academic mobility of teachers, in 2023, associate professor of the Department N. Fedichevatook part in the “International Week” atDa Vinci University (Paris, France), where she gave face-to face lectures “Culture and Human Communication” to the students of the university.

Oleksandra Kudryashova, a student of the “Language and Literature (Japanese, English)” educational program, is studying at one of the leading universities in Japan – OBKG (Osaka Bunka Kokusai Gakkou) under the language training program


Social and humanitarian work

Social and humanitarian work is aimed at training specialists who are guided in their professional activities and everyday life by a deeply conscious belonging to the national history and culture of Ukraine, to general civilizational values ​​and consciously observe state laws and moral norms. Teachers contribute to life self-determination and social formation, intellectual and moral development of students, realization of their creative potential; protect and support the socially vulnerable part of the youth; stimulate student self-government bodies. The work is based on the concept of social and humanitarian work of «Luhansk Taras ShevchenkoNational University”.

The priority areas of social and humanitarian work at the department are:

  • promoting among students the sense of patriotism and a caring attitude to Ukrainian cultural and historical values;
  • socio-psychological support of students;
  • instilling in students respect for the culture and values ​​of the peoples of the countries of the East; fostering in students a tolerant attitude towards representatives of other cultures, to their way of life and worldview;
  • organization of cultural, artistic and public events aimed at popularizing oriental languages ​​and cultures in Ukraine.

There is a scientific and discussion group of future orientalists at the department.At the meetings of the group, the leader of the group, Nataliia Fedicheva conducts discussions about department research work;the directions of research in the field of oriental studies;about the promotion of academic integrity among students within the framework of the “STOP plagiarism” project. Teachers and students of the Department of Oriental Languages ​​hold meetings of the Youth Club of Oriental Cultures, where everyone can share their thoughts and give short talks. Representatives of other cultures, writers, journalists, translators, scientists are invited to the meeting. Faculty graduates of the faculty of different years. Among the guests were: V. M. Pidviyny, associate professor, candidate of philological sciences, senior researcher of the National Library of Ukraine named after V.I. Vernadskyi, graduate student of Taras Shevchenko National University Li Weihua, scientists Zhang Chun and Wen Xuemei from Hebei Pedagogical University, China, associate professor Irfan Torsunoglu from Karabuk University, Turkey.

At the meeting in May 2021, students had an opportunity to meet Haruna Aoki, a leading specialist of the Japanese company Yume Global. Students listened to her presentation about study and employment opportunities in Japan. In the fall of 2022, they met with the stageholder, IT specialist Evgeny Smola, where they got acquainted with the peculiarities of the translator’s work in the IT sphere. 

The department organizes the Theater Festival dedicated to the International Theater Day (https://luguniv.edu.ua/?p=34458, https://luguniv.edu.ua/?p=45303). 

The program of the festivals includes cultural humorous sketches, performances in Eastern languages ​​with the use of national costumes, musical accompaniment, dances and songs. Performances as a rule contain elements of different cultures, namely: choreography, songs, and artifacts. The actors are students and teachers of the department.

In 2020, future philologists studying Chinese and Japanese languages ​​participated in the competition for the best essay on the topic “My Favorite University”. Essays were written by students in the oriental language they are studying  (https://luguniv.edu.ua/?p=92240, https://luguniv.edu.ua/?p=98530). In 2021, students studying Chinese and students of Poltava Lyceum No. 3, where the Chinese language is taught at the initiative of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, prepared the collection of publication  “Artistic and Folklore Works of China in the Field of Ukrainian Translations” (a collection of pupil-student translations) .

In 2022, students learning Chinese attended a master class by the famous artist and calligrapher Chi Shaoting. During the event, the participants learned to draw bamboo, and at the same time, our winners were able to hear the Chinese language from a native speaker.
