Department History

The Department of Management was established in 1999 within the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics as the Department of Economics and Management. The department was headed by Professor HryhoriiVasylovychSaiienko, Doctor of Economics. The first enrollment of bachelor’s students occurred in 2000.

In response to the growing demand for economic and managerial specialists during the privatization of the economy and the creation of private enterprises, the Institute of Economics and Business was founded in 2001 as part of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University. The Department of Economics and Management became the foundation for forming other departments within the institute.

In 2004, the first cohort of bachelor’s graduates in “Management of Organizations” completed their studies. In 2005, the department was renamed the Department of Management, and the first specialists and master’s graduates were awarded degrees.

From its inception, the Department of Management has been shaped by dynamic scientific development and the continuous improvement of management practices, incorporating global best practices while considering the industrial infrastructure of Luhansk and the surrounding region.

Due to the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) in 2014, the department, along with the university, relocated to Starobilsk in the Luhansk region. In March 2022, following the occupation of Starobilsk, the department moved to Myrhorod, Poltava Region, where it continues to adapt to new challenges.

Since August 2022, the department has been headed by Associate Professor LiudmylaZaitseva, Candidate of Economic Sciences. In December 2023, the Department of Management merged with the Department of Documentation and Information Activities and became part of the Institute of Business and Management.

Research Activities

Research is conducted under the state-approved comprehensive theme, “Improving Methods of Training Management Specialists and Organizational Management in the Context of Economic Modernization” (State Registration Number: 0117U005552).

The department focuses on:

  • Integrating digital technologies in education.
  • Applying dual approaches to teaching management.
  • Developing methodologies for local community growth and economic strategies.

Within this theme, the department conducts research and develops practical solutions in several key areas, achieving significant new scientific results.

In the area of improving management training, studies are continually conducted and published on integrating information technologies into the educational process, particularly modern digital management approaches and dual teaching methods that immerse students in the practical challenges of enterprises and organizations.

Up until the large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the department was involved in creating a methodology for justifying relevant directions for the development of territorial communities (using Luhansk region as an example), in collaboration with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Jointly with the Department of Economics, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship at the Institute of Economics and Business, research on national business cultures in Ukraine and Poland was conducted as part of a cooperation program between the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA). Two articles resulting from this research were published in journals indexed by Web of Science.

In 2021, the department collaborated with the Ministry of Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories to develop the “Strategy for Economic Development of Donetsk and Luhansk Regions until 2030,” approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on August 18, 2021, and slated for implementation after de-occupation.

Research into improving enterprise and organizational management continues, focusing on decision-making methods in today’s dynamic market environment. The primary findings, authored by Prof. Andriy Kolosov, are featured in the monograph-essay “Current Issues in Economics and Management in Ukraine,” commemorating the 100th anniversary of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University in 2021.

Faculty research outputs are consistently integrated into the educational process, enriching the bachelor’s and master’s programs in “Management.” This is reflected in the department’s scientific and methodological publications.

Students actively participate in the department’s scientific activities, contributing to research conferences and publishing their findings in thesis collections and academic journals.

In April 2024, during “Science Days” at the university, a conference titled “Current Challenges in the Development of Information Activities in a Global Context” was co-organized with the East Ukrainian National University named after Volodymyr Dahl. This event unified the works of students specializing in “Management” and “Library, Information, and Archival Studies.”
