The Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Literature is a profiler for all specialties of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology and Journalism, as students study the disciplines of the literary cycle.

The Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Literature provides training of competitive specialists in teaching Ukrainian and foreign literature, whose professional competence correlates with world standards of philological education.

Priority tasks of the department: development, implementation, monitoring and correction of educational and professional training programs for teachers of general secondary education institutions, philologists and translators; organization of training in literary and methodical educational components; methodical support of educational and production practices; management of the scientific work of education seekers, execution of scientific research works; preparation and conducting of the final certification of graduates; work on the scientific topic “Literature in multicultural discourse”.

History of the department

The history of the Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Literature is connected with the history of Taras Shevchenko Luhansk National University.

The department of Ukrainian and foreign literature is one of the oldest at the university. The teaching of Ukrainian literature began with the opening of the Donetsk Institute of Public Education in 1923, first at the faculty of social education, then at the faculty of professional education, and finally from 1931 – at the separate faculty of language and literature. In 1934, a department was created, where teachers of Ukrainian and foreign literature worked.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY

The educational activity of the department consists in the implementation of literary and methodical educational components of educational and professional programs in specialties 014. Secondary education and 035. Philology of the first (bachelor’s), second (master’s) levels of higher education, educational and scientific programs of the third (educational and scientific) level in specialty 035 Philology.

Applicants of the second (master’s) level of higher education study the following basic educational components of the Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Literature:

• Actual problems of modern foreign literature in the context of the world literary process

The educational and scientific program “Philology” for the training of candidates of the third (doctor of philosophy) level of higher education involves the study of the following educational components:

• History of philological students
• Methodology of philological research
• Methodology of teaching philological disciplines in higher education

Practical training of education seekers is provided by pedagogical, scientific-pedagogical, literary and local studies practices, which take place in institutions of general secondary, vocational and technical and higher education.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

A powerful scientific school has been created at the department of Ukrainian and foreign literature, under the leadership of professors of the department theses of candidates of philological sciences, doctors of philosophy and doctors of philological sciences are defended.

The teachers of the department of Ukrainian and foreign literature are working on the scientific topic “Ukrainian literature in multicultural discourse”. Its purpose and tasks are implemented in the research of the department’s teachers in the following areas: comparative and typological research of Ukrainian and foreign literature, topical issues of Shevchenko studies, the Ukrainian “shot revival”, sixties, modern Ukrainian literature; poetics of works for children; mythopoetics of artistic texts; creativity of writers of Slobozhanshchyna; collection, systematization and popularization of regional folklore; current problems of the methodology of teaching literature in secondary schools and literary disciplines in higher education institutions; comparative analysis in the school literature course; method of studying the literature of the native region. The research laboratory “Ukrainian literature in multicultural and multidisciplinary discourses” operates at the department.

The teachers of the department publish scientific articles, participate in international and all-Ukrainian scientific conferences, seminars, round tables, perform the functions of scientific supervisors of students who are participants in competitions of student scientific works, Olympiads, and student conferences.

The Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Literature, the Department of Romano-Germanic Philology, together with the Department of Ukrainian and Foreign Literatures and Methods of Their Teaching of Ternopil National Pedagogical University named after Volodymyr Hnatyuk (a signed cooperation agreement) are holding the All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conference “Language and Literature in Multicultural Discourse”. Conference participants receive certificates. Based on the results of the conference, a collection of scientific publications is published.

SCIENTIFIC AND RESEARCH WORK WITH EDUCATION GETTING

The teachers of the department of Ukrainian and foreign literature actively involve students in research work. Problem student groups have been created, which work on the following topics: “Development trends of modern Ukrainian literature”, “Modern interpretation of classical literary heritage”. Every year, as part of the Taras Shevchenko National University Science Days, the department organizes scientific readings with the participation of awardees, encouraging them to do research work. Its results include the publication of articles and theses, speeches at student scientific and practical conferences, seminars, participation in competitions of student scientific works.
