Workshop from a History Teacher
The workshop was dedicated to the peculiarities of organizing students’ research activities in history. The event was held at the invitation of the Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of History and Archaeology Yehor Brailian.
The audience of the workshop was bachelor’s and master’s students of the educational programs “History, Law” and “Secondary Education (History and Civics)”, who joined it within the educational components on the methodology of teaching history. In addition, teachers of the Department of History and Archaeology and all interested parties were invited to participate in the event.
During the event, the speaker focused on the practical aspects of organizing students’ historical research, in particular, she outlined the stages of work on a scientific project – from choosing a topic and formulating a problem to presenting the results. Special attention was paid to the development of students’ critical thinking skills, working with historical sources, as well as adherence to the principles of academic integrity.
Iryna Yakovenko shared her own experience in preparing students for participation in scientific research competitions, in particular the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and also demonstrated examples of successful student projects. Workshop participants had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with effective methods of motivating students to research activities, and also received practical advice on supporting students in the process of writing scientific papers.
The format of the event provided for active interaction. Students proposed their own topics for works, discussed typical difficulties that arise during the organization of student research, and jointly looked for ways to overcome them. Such an exchange of experience contributed to the deepening of the professional competencies of future history teachers.
Holding such events is an important component of the preparation of students, as it allows combining theoretical knowledge with real pedagogical practices and modern approaches to teaching history.
The Department of History and Archaeology expresses its sincere gratitude to Iryna Yakovenko for the meaningful and relevant workshop and hopes for further fruitful cooperation.
