Open Lecture on the Topic "The Art of Public Speaking"
The event was conducted by Viktoriia Shekhovtsova-Burianova - Doctor of Philosophy, lecturer at the Department of Philosophy and International Communication of the NUBiP of Ukraine, founder of the School of Public Speaking, who has significant practical experience in training students in the field of effective communication. The lecture took place on March 24, 2026 in the Zoom meeting format and was aimed at developing applied public speaking skills.
The lecture content combined theoretical principles and practical tools. In particular, the importance of public speaking as a key component of professional communication was revealed, which ensures the ability to effectively interact, maintain the audience's attention, and promote personal development. Special attention was paid to the structure of the speech - from the formation of the topic and main idea to the logic of constructing the introductory, main, and concluding parts, which allows you to make the speech meaningful and convincing.
The practical part of the lecture focused on preparing for the speech, overcoming anxiety, and developing speech techniques. Participants were introduced to methods of dealing with stress, in particular through breathing exercises, self-observation, and forming a positive attitude towards the speech. Considerable attention was paid to the role of non-verbal communication - gestures, posture, eye contact, as well as intonation and pauses as tools for emphasizing meaning and maintaining the audience's attention.
An important element of the lecture was practical recommendations for preparing a speech: determining the purpose of the speech, analyzing the audience, forming key theses, refusing to memorize the text in favor of a conscious presentation of the material, as well as the importance of rehearsal and working on diction. Special emphasis was placed on typical mistakes during the speech, in particular excessive formality, the use of parasitic words and insufficient contact with the audience.
The practical value of the lecture lies in the possibility of direct application of the knowledge gained in the educational and professional activities of education seekers. This concerns the preparation and conduct of presentations, participation in scientific conferences, public discussions, as well as the development of the skills to reasonedly express a position and effectively interact with different audiences, including children and adolescents.
In the context of the educational program "Secondary Education (History and Civics)", the acquired skills acquire special importance, since they are directly related to future professional activities in the field of education, educational work and the formation of civic competence. At the same time, the interdisciplinary nature of the lecture emphasized the universality of public speaking as a component of modern humanitarian education.
Conducting such events contributes to the combination of academic training with practical competencies, the development of a culture of public speaking and improving the quality of the educational process in general.
