Participation in an International Academic Lecture Series
On May 13, 2026, a scholar of our university – Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Literary Studies and Oriental Philology and the Department of Foreign Languages, and research trainee at the Department of Modern German Literary Studies of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (Germany, DAAD scholarship holder), Natalіia Leonidivna Yuhan – took part in a major international academic event.
As part of the cooperation between the Chernivtsi branch of the Society for the German Language (GfdS) and Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, an online lecture was delivered by the distinguished German linguist Professor Ernest W. B. Hess-Lüttich.
Professor Ernest Hess-Lüttich’s lecture, entitled “Policies of Multilingualism in International Comparison: EU/Germany, Switzerland, India, South Africa”, aroused considerable interest within the academic community. Professor Natalia Yuhan’s participation in such events contributes to the integration of the State Institution “Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University” into the global educational space and promotes the exchange of experience with leading academic schools worldwide.
Professor Hess-Lüttich presented a systematic analysis of language strategies, focusing in particular on:
• the specifics of multilingualism in the European Union, where official institutions deal with 380 possible language combinations;
• the unique experience of India, which has hundreds of languages and 21 official languages;
• an analysis of the linguistic situation in Switzerland, South Africa, and the Caucasus;
• the relevance of these issues for Ukraine.
Special attention during the discussion was devoted to language policy in Ukraine and the resolution of possible language conflicts. The discussion of these issues by Professor Hess-Lüttich together with Ukrainian scholars, including representatives of our university, made it possible to gain a deeper understanding of Ukrainian realities through the prism of international experience.
The event brought together scholars from the University of Bern, the Technical University of Berlin, the University of Cape Town, and leading higher education institutions of Ukraine. Participation in events of this level once again confirms the strong academic potential of the faculty members of the State Institution “Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University” in the international arena.
