Our First-Year Students Deepen Their Knowledge of Linguistics and Slavic Philology
The classes focused on “Introduction to Linguistics” and “Slavic Philology,” subjects that provide an important theoretical foundation for further study of philological disciplines.
During the lectures, students explored the origins of language, the main approaches to its study, the genealogical classification of languages, and the major language families. They also examined the place of the Slavic languages within the world’s language system. Particular attention was given to general and theoretical issues in linguistics, the nature of language, its functions, and its role in the lives of individuals and society.
The practical component of the classes introduced students to the structural levels of the language system. They examined the phonetic and phonological, morphemic, word-formational, lexical and lexico-semantic, morphological, and syntactic levels of language, as well as their specific features and interrelationships. The students also considered how linguistic units at different levels form an integrated system and ensure the effective functioning of language as a whole.
While studying Slavic philology, first-year students had the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the common origins of the Slavic languages, their historical development, their relationship to one another, and their distinctive characteristics.
Such classes help students develop a systematic understanding of language from their very first year of study, strengthen their philological thinking, and learn to analyze linguistic phenomena not in isolation but in relation to one another. A strong foundation in linguistics provides a solid basis for the further professional development of future philologists and journalists.
