Guest Lecture: Key Aspects of Forensic Commodity Examination
Academic and teaching staff and students enrolled in the educational programme “Commodity Science and Examination in Customs Affairs” took part in the event.
During the meeting, the lecturer explained the nature of forensic examination, the organisational and legal principles governing its appointment and conduct, and the role of specialised knowledge in establishing the circumstances of a case. Particular attention was paid to the requirements for forensic experts, including their rights, duties, and responsibility, as well as the need to ensure the completeness of an examination and the objectivity and soundness of an expert opinion.
A substantial part of the lecture focused on the main tasks of commodity examination involving machinery, equipment, raw materials, and consumer goods. The participants considered issues related to determining the value of commercial products, establishing their classification and characteristics, and identifying changes in quality indicators. The lecturer also highlighted the importance of assessing whether the packaging, transportation, and storage conditions of goods comply with established requirements.
Students were particularly interested in the application of commodity-science knowledge during export and import operations, including determining the characteristics of goods in accordance with the Ukrainian Classification of Goods for Foreign Economic Activity. The lecturer outlined how examination results can be used when determining material losses and addressing issues related to inadequate product quality. The theoretical material was supplemented with illustrative examples of objects examined in commodity expertise.
Such meetings deepen students’ understanding of the practical aspects of expert work, contribute to the development of their professional competencies, and strengthen cooperation with practicing specialists.
N. V. Omelchenko, Head of the Educational Programme, expressed sincere gratitude to M. H. Martosenko for the informative lecture, for sharing her professional experience, and for contributing to the practical training of future specialists.
