Faculty of Natural and Agrarian Sciences. 103 years of History
Therefore, the same year - 1923 - is considered the year of the foundation of the Faculty of Natural and Agrarian Sciences. Over the course of 20 years, natural science specialties were formed: in 1927-1929, the Faculty of Professional Education was created on the basis of the Faculty of Social Education, where the Chemical and Agrobiological Departments were opened, and in 1928 the Biological Department was opened. In 1932, the Agrobiological Faculty was created on the basis of the Chemical and Agrobiological Departments, and in 1933 - the Geographical Faculty.
In 1934, DIPE was transformed into the Luhansk State Pedagogical Institute, in the structure of which the Faculty of Agrobiology was reorganized into the Faculty of Chemistry, and in 1936 - into the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Chemistry. In 1939, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR, the institute was named after Taras Shevchenko.
During 1941-1943, the faculty within the institute survived two evacuations, and in the fall of 1943, after its return, a new stage of its restoration and development began.
In 1951, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Geography was created on the basis of two faculties - Geography and Natural Sciences and Chemistry.
The rapid development of the university, significant changes in its structure allowed it to receive the status of the Luhansk State Pedagogical University in 1998, the status of a national university in 2003, and the status of a classical university in 2008. Since then, our university has been called Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University.
With the change in the status of the university and the opening of new specialties, a certain reorganization of the faculty structure is taking place - new departments are being formed and a number of existing departments are being merged. Following this, in 2009, the name of the faculty was changed to the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
Since September 2014, the Faculty of Natural Sciences has been in the third forced evacuation to the city of Starobilsk. Despite the difficulties, the faculty staff is actively working, thanks to which our faculty remains, as before, one of the main fundamental educational units in the structure of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University. The rapid restoration of the productive activity of the faculty in these conditions was due to the efforts, first of all, of the student and teaching staff, who in a short time completely restored and adjusted the educational process in the new conditions. During the work in the city of Starobilsk, the faculty's material and technical base was completely restored - geological and zoological museums, a herbarium, five modern specialized educational and scientific laboratories, multimedia classrooms and an agrobiological station were created. The contingent of students of the faculty has reached 1000 people.
In March 2022, the Faculty of Natural Sciences as part of the university moved to the Poltava region, where it is in the fourth forced evacuation in the city of Myrhorod and the city of Lubny. Despite all the difficulties, the faculty resumed its work and occupied leading positions among other educational units of the university. In May 2023, the student and teaching staff of the faculty celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding. In November 2023, the academic council of the university made a decision to reorganize the Faculty of Natural Sciences from February 1, 2024 into the Educational and Research Institute of Natural and Agrarian Sciences. Following the results of the competitive selection, Matsai N.Yu. was appointed director of the Institute. In September 2025, the academic council of the university made a decision to reorganize the institute from December 1, 2025 into the Faculty of Natural and Agrarian Sciences.
