Academic Integrity as an Internalised Norm within the University Community
The meeting brought together academic staff, researchers and students from our university, as well as representatives of other Ukrainian higher education institutions. The event attracted 100 participants, reaching the attendance limit for the Google Meet videoconferencing format used.
The speaker was Mr Artem Artiukhov, Head of the Ukrainian Research Integrity Office and Chair of the Ethics Committee of the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance. The meeting was moderated by Professor Oleksandra Liashenko, Doctor of Economic Sciences and founder of the “Security Thinking” project. The event was opened by Iryna Myhovych, Acting Vice-Rector for Academic and Research Affairs. In her welcome address, she emphasised the importance of academic integrity for the quality of education and research and for trust in their outcomes. She also highlighted the timeliness of discussing these issues following the entry into operation of the Law of Ukraine “On Academic Integrity” and the need to consider how its provisions can be applied in university practice.
Artem Artiukhov’s presentation focused on developing a conscious commitment to acting with integrity, grounded in personal convictions and responsibility. He explored the role of university leadership, academic staff, researchers and students in upholding shared ethical values. Particular attention was paid to the influence of personal example, the alignment of declared principles with everyday actions, and the need to address the underlying causes of academic integrity violations. Another significant part of the event was the discussion of challenges associated with the use of generative artificial intelligence in education and research. The discussion addressed transparency in the use of digital tools, authorship and human responsibility for the materials produced.
The meeting included a question-and-answer session, allowing participants to discuss practical aspects of developing a culture of academic integrity within the university community.
We extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Artem Artiukhov for his insightful presentation, to Professor Oleksandra Liashenko for her support in organising and moderating the meeting, and to all participants for their interest in developing a culture of academic integrity.
