HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The history of the Department of Romance & Germanic Philology is connected with the history of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University.
The Department of Romance & Germanic Philology is one of the main ones in the Educational and Research Institute of Philology & Journalism; it was created in 1992. The department is profiling for those structural subdivisions where English, German, French, and Spanish are the first or second specialty. Currently, nine teachers work at the department, including one professor, a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences; 3 associate professors, candidates of philological and pedagogical sciences; and senior teachers and assistants. The department is headed by the candidate of philological sciences, Khairulina Nailia Farytivna.
The primary purpose of the department’s activity is to provide fundamental and professional training of qualified specialists for teaching and research activities.
Priority tasks of the department: development, implementation, monitoring, and correction of educational and professional training programs for teachers of general secondary education institutions, philologists, and translators; organization of training in literary and methodical educational components; methodical support of educational and production practices; management of students’ scientific work, completion of course and master’s theses; preparation and conducting of the final certification of graduates; work on the scientific topic “Professional Training of Specialists in Romano-Germanic Languages in the Intercultural Space: Today’s Challenges” (registration number 0121U112872)”.
The department’s mission: fundamental training of highly qualified specialists capable of proactively realizing their creative potential.
The department’s values are humanity, patriotism, professionalism, integrity, student-centeredness, honesty, trust, justice, and responsibility.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY
The educational activity of the department consists in the implementation of philological and methodical educational components of educational and professional training programs for applicants of the first (bachelor’s) and second (master’s) levels of higher education in the following specialties:

The department provides teaching of professional disciplines for philological majors, including practical English language courses, practical English grammar, practical English phonetics, practice of oral and written communication, business English, lexicology, stylistics, theoretical grammar, theoretical phonetics, history of the English language, structural typology, topical issues of German studies, interpretation of artistic text, theory and practice of translation, linguistic and regional studies, linguistic and intercultural communication, linguistic pragmatics, sociolinguistics, etc.
The professional level of teaching courses in English, German, French, and Spanish philology is being improved due to high-quality methodological support, the introduction of modern teaching methods, the computerization of the learning process, the use of computer classes and the Internet, and the development of distance courses. The department’s teachers constantly improve their qualifications and undergo internships abroad and in Ukraine. The geography of places of study and internship is diverse: Canada, Great Britain, USA, Finland, Spain, Germany, France, China, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Poland. The department teachers participate actively in conferences, seminars of various levels, and international scientific programs. They actively cooperate with the British Council within the framework of the “English for Universities” project. The training of the program (English for Specific Purposes, English for Academic Purposes, English for Specific Purposes for Newly Qualified, Teaching at University in the 21st Century, Academic Teaching Excellence) provides an opportunity to get acquainted with modern approaches to teaching professional disciplines in English, the language of professional direction and English for academic purposes, to improve the level of foreign language skills.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The Department of Romance & Germanic Philology teachers are working on the scientific topic “Professional training of specialists in Romance-Germanic languages in the intercultural space: today’s challenges.” Its purpose and tasks are implemented in researching the department’s teachers in the following areas: Current issues of Romano-Germanic philology and translation studies. Modern strategies of intercultural communication in the European space, the originality of Romano-Germanic literature, innovative methods of teaching Romano-Germanic languages, and peculiarities of using a foreign language in a professional direction.
The scientific and pedagogical staff of the Department of Romano-Germanic Philology is provided by highly qualified certified teachers who continuously improve their knowledge and teaching skills.
SCIENTIFIC AND RESEARCH WORK WITH STUDENTS
The teachers of the Department & Germanic Philology department actively involve students in research work. Within the cooperation framework with the international educational platform Open British University (Open U), extracurricular informal training was organized for students of higher education 1-4 years and master’s students of all department specialties. All applicants completed the following courses: “Everyday English-1,2”, “English in the World Today,” “English Pronunciation in Use,” “Fundamentals of English Grammar,” “Intermediate German,” “Intermediate French,” “Intermediate Spanish,” “The Theory of Translation,” “The Overview of English Literature.” Khairulina N.F., Shekhavtsova S.O., Tyshakova L.T., Yunina O.E., Blednova O.G., Sklyarova I.V. are permanent academic supervisors of students in writing scientific articles, theses, competitive essays, etc. Shapovalova L.V. managed the students who won All-Ukrainian Student Scientific Competitions 2019 prizes. Mayorenko V.I. won third place in the second stage of the All-Ukrainian competition of student scientific works on Romano-Germanic languages. 2020 Mayorenko V.I. won the second city in the second stage of the All-Ukrainian competition of student scientific works on Romano-Germanic languages. 2022. Chuhayeva M.S., a student in the 4th year of the specialty 014 SO language and literature (French, English), “Linguistic and extralinguistic factors of influence, verbalized in the 119th Psalm (based on the material of the French translation)” took first place at the first stage of the All-Ukrainian student competition scientific works in 2022. The II stage was carried out outside the beginning of the war.
