Literary Salon “Halloween and the Day of the Dead in Contemporary English-Language and Latin American Literatures”
On 26 October 2026, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University hosted a literary salon entitled “Halloween and the Day of the Dead in Contemporary English-Language and Latin American Literatures.”
The event was conducted by Natalia Leonidivna Yuhan, Doctor of Philology, Professor, Professor of the Department of Literary Studies and Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages. The literary salon brought together undergraduate students, master’s students, and postgraduate students representing all academic programmes of the Faculty.
During the meeting, participants explored the world of contemporary English-language and Latin American literature, focusing on the themes of fear, memory, death, the afterlife, and the connection between the living and the dead. Particular attention was paid to the ways in which the diverse cultural traditions associated with Halloween and the Day of the Dead are reflected in literary works and transformed into sources of symbols, imagery, and literary narratives.
As part of the literary salon, participants were introduced to works by Washington Irving, H. P. Lovecraft, Agatha Christie, Ray Bradbury, John Updike, Roger Zelazny, as well as contemporary authors working in the genres of Gothic fiction, horror, the supernatural, and fantasy. A separate thematic section focused on the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead and its literary interpretation in the works of Malcolm Lowry, Ray Bradbury, Juan Rulfo, and Carlos Fuentes.
An important component of the meeting was a comparison of English-language and Latin American literary traditions. Participants had an opportunity to examine how different cultures interpret death, remembrance of the deceased, fear of the unknown, and the human desire to preserve a connection with the past.
The literary salon combined educational, intellectual, and cultural dimensions. For the students, it provided an opportunity not only to broaden their knowledge of contemporary literature but also to develop their skills in comparative analysis by examining literary traditions that are typologically related yet culturally distinct.
The atmosphere of the event was further enriched by discussions of well-known screen adaptations of literary works associated with Halloween, including Sleepy Hollow and The Witches of Eastwick, as well as the animated film Coco, which helped participants gain a deeper understanding of the distinctive features of the Mexican Day of the Dead tradition. Participants were also introduced to recent Halloween-themed literary publications and works that may provide engaging reading for autumn evenings.
The organisation of such literary events contributes to the development of reading culture, the enhancement of students’ subject-specific knowledge, and the creation of opportunities for intercultural dialogue through literature.
The literary salon became a space for meaningful discussion, the discovery of new books, and an opportunity to view familiar cultural traditions through the prism of literary expression.
