It is worthy to note department participation in the development of complex topic “Ukrainian Society through the eyes of Chekists” according to the plan of the Institute of Political Science and National Relations of NAS of Ukraine, preparation to publishing of work “Rehabilitated by History: Luhansk Region”. The first two volumes of ten-volume collective work “Memory Book of Ukraine. Winners. Luhansk Region” were published in 2006.

Within the Department of World History and International Relations three scientific schools have been formed and developed. The first of them was founded by the Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Volf Mendelevych Beilis (1923 – 2001) in the 1970s. His followers keep studying the Eastern literature monuments as the source of the Middle Ages history. In 1990s the Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Mykhailo Stepanovych Burian founded the second scientific school, representatives of which study the history of the international relations and foreign policy of Great Powers in the East during the modern and contemporary ages. In 2000s the third school “Sources for Political History and Idea of XIX – XX Century” was developed under the guidance of the Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Ihor Serhiiovych Mykhalskyi.

Political research laboratory at the Department of Political Science and Legal Studies was created to develop joint scientific and research work of the teachers, postgraduates and students. This laboratory works on the following complex topics of the department: “Globalization of the Information Society, Development of Political Culture and Integration Processes of Ukraine as a Subregion of Europe: History, Status and Development Prospects” and “Sources for Political History and Idea”.

A complex topic of the Department of Social Work is “Theoretical and Methodological Basis of Training Social Workers for Work in Society”. The department teachers publish scientific articles, take part in the international and Ukrainian scientific conferences, seminars and round tables. Every year the Department of Social Work presides the sections “Theory of Social Work” and “Methods of Social Work” at LNU Science Days.

The main direction of the scientific activity of the Department of Philosophy and Sociology is the implementation of research program “Relations of the East and the West of Ukraine: Search for Historical Compromise” supported by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the University of Alberta.
