History of the department
The Ukrainian Language department was created in 1921, the year the university was founded. It developed together with the educational institution, preserving the best linguistic and linguistic didactic traditions, affirming the importance of language education for the formation of a citizen, bearer of universal values, determining the priorities of educational and scientific activities in accordance with the requirements of society.
Currently, 10 teachers work at the department, including 2 professors, a doctor of philological sciences and a doctor of pedagogical sciences; 8 docents, including 7 candidates of philology and 1 candidate of pedagogical sciences. The head of the department is Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Nikitina AllaVasylivna.
The main goal of the department’s activity: to ensure the improvement of the general and professional competences of future teachers and teachers of philological and methodical educational components, which will contribute to the qualitative linguistic, linguistic and methodological training of students of the first (bachelor’s), second (master’s) levels of higher education and the third educational and scientific level ‒ doctor of philosophy (PhD).
Priority tasks of the department: ensuring the high quality of educational services in accordance with the standards of higher education and normative documents on the organization of the educational process; organization of educational, scientific and public work on the basis of student-centrism as a new philosophy of educational activity taking into account individual qualities, abilities, individual profile of competences, academic, research and organizational-applied mobility; introduction of progressive methods and modern information technologies of education; improvement of methods for assessing the quality of the educational process; publication of training manuals, methodical developments, recommendations, guidelines for the relevant department; research of topical issues of linguistics and linguistic methodology for the purpose of continuous improvement of the professional level of teachers and students of education.
The mission of the department: effective participation in the formation of competences, raising the professional level of the personality of the future specialist and citizen, his worldview and self-awareness.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY
The department operates on the basis of the normative and legal framework for the organization of the educational process at the Taras Shevchenko Luhansk National University(Regulations; Procedures for ensuring the quality of education).
The teachers of the department ensure the implementation of mandatory and optional educational components in accordance with educational programs:
- the first (bachelor’s) level of higher education: “014.01 СО. Ukrainian language and literature”, “014.01 СО. Ukrainian language and literature. Language and literature (English)” (full-time and extramural forms of education).
- the second (master’s) level of higher education: “014.01 СО. Ukrainian language and literature”, “014.01 СО. Ukrainian language and literature. Language and literature (English)” (full-time and extramural forms of education).
- the third educational and scientific level of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): “035 Philology”.
Types and bases of practices:
Secondary education “Ukrainian language and literature”, Secondary education “Ukrainian language and literature. Language and literature (English)”.
Types of practices: literary and local studies and dialectological, pedagogical, psychological and pedagogical, scientific and pedagogical.
Bases of practice: institutions of general secondary, pre-higher professional and higher education.
The population centers of Ukraine serve as the basis of dialectological practice of first (bachelor’s) level applicants.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
There are 2 scientific laboratories at the department:
- 1. Research laboratory “Сучасні технології лінгвістичного й лінгводидактичного аналізу тексту” (regulations about the research laboratory).
The purpose of the laboratory’s activities is to research current problems in the field of Ukrainian linguistics and linguistic didactics, methods of teaching the Ukrainian language in secondary and higher education institutions, to develop and implement effective practices for the training of specialists – teachers of the Ukrainian language and literature.
The main activity of the laboratory: carrying out scientific research within two complex scientific topics:
- “Лінгводидактичні засади мовної освіти в освітніх закладах різного типу” (scientific leader – Doctor of Pedagogy, Prof. A. V.Nikitina);
- “Мовні стилі у просторі національної культури” (scientific director – Doctor of Philology, Associate Professor O. E. Kleschova).
- 2. Educational and scientific laboratory “Діалектологічні та лінгвокраєзнавчі дослідження” (regulations on the educational and scientific laboratory).
The purpose of the laboratory’s: activity is to research current problems in the field of dialectology, onomastics and sociolinguistics, linguocultural studies, linguistic didactics; to teach students to give a linguistic commentary on the linguistic phenomena of reality; to develop and implement effective practices for the training of specialists – teachers of the Ukrainian language and literature.
Within the framework of the scientific project “Структурно-семантичне і функційне дослідження лексичних одиниць та граматичних категорій в літературній мові та діалектному мовленні” (information about the topic registration) the topic is represented by two tasks:
- “Українські східнослобожанські говірки: динаміка мовної системи” (supervisor – Doctor of Philology, Prof. K. Hlukhovtseva);
- “Категорія експресивності в уснорозмовному текстіt” (scientific supervisor – Ph.D., Ph.D., associate professor V.Lesnova).
General departmental scientific problems are specified in studies on modern Ukrainian dialectology and phraseology; text linguistics, cognitive and communicative linguistics, rhetoric; studying the language and speech of artistic texts; topical issues of modern Ukrainian language didactics and methods of teaching language and speech in educational institutions of various types; studying the peculiarities of the formation of the linguistic personality of pupils and students; problems of the pedagogical discourse of the lexicographer; development of educational concepts, programs, manuals on the Ukrainian language.
