Open Lecture on the Day of Diplomatic Service Workers

Yehor Brailian, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of History and Archaeology, delivered an open lecture on the Day of Diplomatic Service Workers.

On December 22, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of History and Archaeology of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University Yehor Brailian gave an open lecture dedicated to the Day of Diplomatic Service Workers. The scientist spoke about how the foreign policy of the Ukrainian People’s Republic was formed in 1917-1918. It was on December 22 that the General Secretariat for International Affairs under the government of the UNR was created. The first head of the institution was the famous public figure, politician, member of the Ukrainian Party of Socialist Federalists Oleksandr Shulhyn (1889-1960).

Yehor Brailian focused his attention in his lecture on the dilemma of finding allies during the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-1921. The signing of a separate peace treaty between the UNR and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire) in Brest-Litovsk on February 9, 1918 is considered the beginning of the recognition of the UNR on the international stage. However, later, the UNR Directory sought to establish a dialogue with the Entente countries (Great Britain, France), but geopolitical circumstances were difficult.

The historian recommended the website of the Diplomatic e-archive for a detailed study of the history of Ukrainian diplomacy in the 20th century.
