All-Ukrainian Library Day

On the All-Ukrainian Library Day, which is celebrated annually on September 30, attention will be paid to the history of the library of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University.

Its life path is special in that it closely intertwines the history of the country, region and city.

Over more than a century of existence, the library has become an integral part of university life, has educated more than one generation of readers, has formed its own traditions and has gained considerable authority. However, it has also faced serious challenges. Since 2014, the library, together with the university, has been forcibly evacuated twice. This led to the loss of the main book collection, a decrease in the number of reading rooms and a reduction in the material and technical base. But despite all the difficulties, the library is reviving and is gradually restoring its resources.

Recently, the grand opening of the new building of the library took place. The event was made possible thanks to the close cooperation of the university management and the Lubny City Council. An important role was played by the initiative of the head of the university’s academic council, Professor Vitalii Semyonovych Kurylo, who initiated the collection of books for the fund. Today, this good deed continues, and the library receives publications in various languages - Ukrainian, English, German, Polish and others.

Books that have been preserved since 2014 are especially valuable, because they carry not only knowledge, but also the memory of the history of the university. A great contribution to the restoration of the fund was made by the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine, the National Institute for Strategic Studies, as well as the head of the academic council, Vitalii Semyonovych Kurylo, and the rector of LTSNU, Olena Leonidivna Karaman, who personally donated part of their own collections to the library.

Today, the activities of the university library are not limited to working with the book fund. It provides access to numerous electronic resources and scientometric databases, cooperates with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the State Scientific and Technical Library of Ukraine. Students and teachers of LTSNU have free access to Scopus, Web of Science, Research4Life and other international resources.
