Font Design at the Design Department of the ER IA

The other day, the first-year students majoring in graphic design of the Educational and Research Institute of Arts had a particularly good day — a lecture on “Font Design.”

The teacher began seriously:

— The font is the face of the text.

And the students looked at each other: “Well, if it’s a face, then definitely without makeup, because everything is black and white.”

One student asks:

— Can you make the letter “A” with ears so that it smiles?

— You can, — the teacher answers, — but then it’s no longer “A”, but your pet.

Towards the end of the lesson, one of them experimented with the font so much that the “Zh” became like a spider. The teacher praised:

— This is no longer a letter, but a whole art object!

And so the students understood: in fonts, the main thing is not only proportions, but also a good mood. Because a cheerful letter is always easier to read.
