LAUNCH OF AN INITIATIVE TO SUPPORT UKRAINIAN RESEARCHERS

The Research Council of Norway (RCN) announces the launch of an initiative to support Ukrainian researchers in partnership with the National Research Foundation of Ukraine (NRFU).

Since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Research Council of Norway (Norgesforskningsråd, RCN) has been actively supporting Ukrainian researchers and the National Research Foundation of Ukraine (NRFU).

In March 2025, RCN announced the allocation of NOK 60 million as part of a comprehensive strategy to support science in Ukraine. This package of support measures covers both urgent and medium-term actions – from immediate assistance to researchers to the long-term strengthening of Ukraine’s scientific system. Special attention is given to integrating Ukrainian researchers into international research programmes, as well as preparing future calls where Ukraine will be a priority country in the fields of security, democracy, and post-war recovery.

As part of this support, RCN is now launching an initiative to support Ukrainian researchers in partnership with the NRFU.

The initiative “Engage a Researcher from Ukraine in an Ongoing Research Project” covers all thematic areas and aims to:

  • Support and develop Ukrainian research under wartime conditions;
  • Involve Ukrainian researchers in ongoing projects led by Norwegian researchers;
  • Expand international cooperation between the scientific communities of both countries.

The terms of the initiative have been formulated in close cooperation with the National Research Foundation of Ukraine, taking into account the current needs of the Ukrainian scientific community and focusing on practical support for researchers who continue their work despite the war. The NRFU will handle the verification of documents submitted by Ukrainian applicants.

Application submission opens: September 1, 2025.
Project start dates for Ukrainian researchers joining ongoing projects: October 1 – December 31, 2025.

Expected total funding available under this call: NOK 15,000,000.
Funding per project may range from NOK 1 million to NOK 1.5 million.

Preliminary participation conditions are available in English and Norwegian on the official RCN website: https://surl.li/jwuvmq

Please note that this is a preliminary version of the announcement, which may be modified before the application period opens. We recommend following updates and further announcements on the official resources of RCN and NRFU.
