XIII Student Olympiad in Algebra
25.4.2025
The traditional XIII Student Algebra Olympiad was held at the ER IMIT, dedicated to the memory of Professor V. M. Usenko (01.04.1951-06.03.2006).
On April 23, the Educational and Research Institute of Mathematics and Information Technologies, within the framework of the Science Days and work of the algebra research group “AlgebraResearchGroup” (ARG), with the help of the popular online communications service GoogleMeet, the traditional XIII Student Algebra Olympiad was held, dedicated to the memory of the outstanding Ukrainian algebraist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Vitalii Mykhailovych Usenko. The scientist worked at our university from 2001 to 2006 and during this period made a significant contribution to the development of algebra in the Luhansk region and Ukraine. On the initiative of Professor V.M. Usenko, in 2002 the world-famous mathematical journal “Algebra and Discrete Mathematics” was organized, which has been included in the international scientometric database Scopus since 2012, and in the database Emerging Sources Citation Index (Web of Science) since 2016, and currently this journal has the Q3 quartile according to SchimagoJournal&CountryRank.
The head of the algebra research group, Doctor of Philosophy and Mathematics, Professor Yurii Zhuchok, delivered an introductory speech. The algebra Olympiad is usually held for students of mathematical specialties and takes place in one round. The tasks related to such sections of mathematics as number theory, linear algebra, graph theory, semigroup theory, group theory, and universal algebra. The jury included members of the algebra research group: Doctor of Philosophy and Mathematics. d., Professor Yurii Zhuchok, Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor Yulia Zhuchok and Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor Olena Toichkina.
The winners of the Olympiad were: a 4th year student majoring in “Secondary Education. Mathematics. Physics” Yevhen Kuriachyi (1st place), 1st year master’s students majoring in “Secondary Education. Mathematics” Yurii Stakhov (2nd place) and Olha Kolpakova (2nd place), and also 3rd year student majoring in “Secondary Education. Mathematics. Physics” Olena Tetereshchenko (3rd place).
We sincerely congratulate the winners and wish all participants further success!
