Guest Lecture on the Culture of Trade and Hospitality

On March 12, 2025,  students of the Educational and Research Institute of Technologies and Trade of all specialties had the opportunity to join an interesting online event, which took place in the format of a guest lecture.

The lecture on the topic “Bazaar or Market? Shopping or Excursion?” was given by Tetiana Mirzodaeva, Associate Professor of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Business of the National University of Food Technologies. The meeting was organized within the partnership agreement on cooperation between the Department of Professional Education, Restaurant and Tourism Business of LTSNU (Lubny) and the Department of Tourism and Hotel Business of the National University of Food Technologies (Kyiv).

The meeting was moderated by Olena Karolop, Associate Professor of the Department of Professional Education, Restaurant and Tourism Business of LTSNU, who in her opening remarks emphasized the unchanging interest of tourists in colorful historical or craft city markets.

The lecturer Tetiana Mirzodaeva revealed the uniqueness of Ukrainian bazaars, markets and fairs. The lecturer presented the following problematic issues for the audience to consider:

  • How did bazaars influence the formation of Ukrainian national culture?
  • What traditions and customs of trade have survived to this day?
  • What is the difference between a bazaar and a market and how to use these terms correctly?
  • Can ordinary shopping be turned into an exciting excursion?

During the meeting, the participants delved into the world of service and trade and learned about:

  • Colloquial and everyday terminology: they revealed the meaning of the words “market”, “bazaar”, “trade market”, “forum”, “fair”. They learned how to use these terms correctly in different contexts.
  • The Ukrainian bazaar as a cultural phenomenon of Ukraine – they talked about the history of Ukrainian bazaars and their role in the formation of national culture.
  • They learned about the traditions and customs associated with trade in Ukraine and abroad.
  • Architecture of trade: they examined how the architecture of commercial buildings changed throughout history. They learned about the features of the architecture of modern markets.
  • What are interesting excursions to modern city markets? We discovered unusual routes and interesting stories related to city markets. We learned how a market can become a tourist and gastronomic location.
  • How to talk about a bazaar in a way that will keep the attention of tourists? We received practical advice on conducting excursions in markets. We learned how to make the story interesting and exciting.

During the lecture, the audience plunged into the world of trade and hospitality, discovered interesting facts about Ukrainian markets; learned more about Ukrainian culture and traditions; and even received advice on excursions to bazaars as tourist locations.

The interesting lecture continued with an active discussion of the topic, during which the participants shared their thoughts on the role of Ukrainian bazaars and fairs in the formation of national culture, recalled traditions and proverbs associated with bazaars and fairs.

The guest lecture was joined by students and teachers of the Separate Structural Unit “Professional College of LTSNU”, as well as students of Poltava State Agrarian University.
