The department was established as a separate component in the 1960s, it was called scientific communism. Among the teachers of the department there were participants of the Great Patriotic War, honored people, bright personalities – Bazhutin B. P, Alimpiev I.Ya., Litvinenko V.A., Kolontai V.Ya. etc. The waves of perestroika at the end of the twentieth century greatly changed the teaching of social sciences in universities, which led to the forming of an united department of political science and law.
The main purpose and tasks of the department: training of highly professional specialists in political science, formation of high political and culture level of consciousness among students of all specialties. Although, the studding of scientific understanding of the national political system and political processes in the world, dissemination of knowledge about the causes and consequences of political phenomena.
The mission of the department: effective participation in the formation of a high level of political and legal culture of Ukrainian society, through the training of highly qualified specialists in “Political Science (Public Administration. Political and parliamentary activities)”, research in this area and dissemination of knowledge about the political process region.

Regulatory framework for the organization of the educational process in the State Institution “Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University” (Regulations and Procedures for Quality Assurance in Education).

Research activities
The department has postgraduate and doctoral programs. Scientific topics of the department: “The place of armed violence in the system of power relations” and “Integration processes of Ukraine in the age of globalization”, which involve graduates who have the opportunity to participate in research, writing papers, abstracts of conferences within scientific topics.
Every year at the Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University, the Department of Political Science and Law manages the sections of Political Science and Jurisprudence, encouraging higher education students to study the socio-political problems of the region on Science Days. The staff of the department is actively working on a collective monograph, preparing for the publication of a collection of scientific works on political science. In order to stimulate united research work of the department teachers, graduate students and the laboratory department students at applied research. The main tasks of the laboratory are:
- acquainting students with the achievements of domestic scientific thought in the field of humanities and political science and expanding their understanding of modern political processes;
- participation of students in the implementation of the research of the department “Armed violence: main trends”, during which a comprehensive analysis of the main trends of armed violence in the world with further assessment of their impact on the political process in Ukraine. According to the results of the project: “The place of armed violence in the system of power relations” 20 articles were published, 2 monographs were published, 23 abstracts of reports at international, national and regional conferences were published;
- participation of students in the development of problems of integration processes of Ukraine in the era of globalization. According to the results of the research: 24 articles and 13 abstracts of reports at international, national and regional conferences were published.
Appropriate material and technical conditions have been created to ensure the functioning of the laboratory.
On the basis of the laboratory there are a student political and legal club “Analityka”, which has become a communication platform for discussing socio-political issues of modern development of Ukraine, and was founded in September 2020 and a political and analytical center.
Among the main activities of the political-analytical center:
- research and analytical work on topical issues of applied political science;
- journalistic work aimed at covering current issues;
- creation and development of the plan of cooperation of the PAC with Ukrainian institutions, educational institutions and training institutions focused on the training of professionals in the field of applied political science;
- educational and training work with representatives of various groups among the population in Ukraine, designed to promote dialogue through public and cultural cooperation.

International relations
The international activity of the department is focused on establishing relations with the leading scientific institutions of the world. Teachers of the department publish works in foreign publications, in particular: “European and political discourse”, „Evropsk ý politick ý apr á vn í diskurz”, „Acta Scientifica Academiae Ostroviensis SectioA”, „Nauki Humanistyczne, SpoleczneI Techniczne NR”. The staff of the department actively cooperates with international non-governmental organizations, namely with the representatives of the UN, OSCE and the Red Cross.
