The department was established as a separate unit in the 1960s and was initially called the Department of Scientific Communism. Among its teaching staff were participants in World War II, distinguished individuals, and remarkable personalities such as B. P. Bazhutyn, I. Ya. Alimpiyev, V. A. Litvinenko, V. Ya. Kolontai, and others. The wave of reforms at the end of the 20th century significantly transformed the teaching of social sciences in higher education institutions, leading to the creation of a unified Department of Political Science and Law.

In 2010, the department began training students under the specialty “Political Science.” Following the university’s forced evacuation in 2014, the department’s scholars began researching issues related to the use of various forms of armed violence in the political process. These efforts resulted in numerous academic achievements, including the successful defense of three doctoral dissertations by S. O. Vovk, O. B. Balatska, and A. V. Bader. In 2023, as part of major structural changes within the university, the department’s name was changed to the Department of Political Science and International Relations, with a focus on educating students in the corresponding program.

Main Goals and Objectives of the Department:

  • Training highly qualified specialists in Political Science and International Relations.
  • Developing a high level of political and legal awareness and culture among students of all specialties.
  • Conducting scientific analysis of the domestic political system and global political processes.
  • Disseminating knowledge about the causes and consequences of political phenomena to the public.

Mission of the Department:

The department actively contributes to raising the political and legal culture of Ukrainian society by training highly qualified specialists in the educational programs “Political Science” and “International Relations, Social Communications, and Regional Studies.” It also carries out scientific research in these fields and spreads knowledge about political processes among the population.
