HISTORY AND PRESENT DAY

The history of the Translation Studies Department at the Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University began in 2005, when under the leadership of the associate professor at the time, now professor, doctor of philological sciences, Olena Yu. Moiseienko, the training of specialists in translation was initiated. From the first days, this team managed to gain respect and authority among other pedagogical scientists and university students. All professors of the department were and remain professionals that are distinguished for their erudition, intelligence and are respected by student youth.

Today the department consists of 5 professors, 3 of which are candidates of science, associate professors. All of them are highly qualified with practical experience and convey it to the students during the training of future philologists and translators/interpreters.

Theoretical achievements of the department are realized during the mandatory as well as the elective courses like “Theory and Practice of Translation”, “Introduction to Translation Studies”, “Introduction to Foreign Philology”, “Fundamentals of Literary Translation”, “Theory and Practice of Translation”, “Practical Course of English Language”, “Typological Research of Languages”, “Translation of Business Discourse”, “Scientific Researches in Translation Studies”, “Theory of Language Communication”, “Communicative Strategies of English Language”, “Text Stylistics”.

The Acting Head of the Department is Svitlana V. Perova, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor.

The main goal of the department: to ensure the improvement of general skills and the formation of professional competencies of future philologists-specialists in translation, which will ensure higher quality philological capabilities of higher education students at the first (Bachelor’s) and second (Master’s) Degrees.

The main tasks of the department: to create pleasant educational and pedagogical environments that will allow learners to assimilate a comprehensive spectrum of specialized information, skills, and talents in order to develop a professional position and professional competence; to provide higher quality of educational services in compliance with normative standards on the structure of the educational process and the Standards of Higher Education; to organize educational, scientific, and humanitarian work with a focus on students as a new educational activity philosophy; to introduce the principles, teaching tools, and techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of the educational process that are the most effective; to publish training manuals, methodological developments, recommendations, instructions according to the profile of the department; to research of topical issues of philology and teaching of foreign languages in institutions of higher education with the aim of constantly improving the professional level of teachers and students of education.

The mission of the department: to promote the development of the prospective translation specialist’s professional competencies as well as his personal growth as a citizen of his nation, as well as his knowledge of himself and of the world around him.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY

In its activities, the Translation Studies Department is ruled by the Laws of Ukraine “On Education”, and “On Higher Education”, the Statute of the ” Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University”, the Development Strategy of the SI “Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University” 2019-2025.

The main areas of activity of the department are: educational work, research work, social and humanitarian work, career guidance work and international activity.

The Translation Studies Department provides training in the English language and translation studies disciplines of higher education students of the first (bachelor) level in the specialty “035 Philology”, specializations 035.041 – Germanic languages and literatures (including translation), first – English”, 035.065 – Oriental languages and literatures (including translation), the first is Chinese, the educational programs “Translation (English and second foreign language (Chinese))”, “Language and literature (Chinese, English)”, “Language and literature (Japanese, English)” and the second (master’s) level in the specialty “035 Philology. Translation (English)”, as well as specialties 055 “International relations, public communications and regional studies”.

All of the department’s lecturers have access to resources for mixed and remote work, including Educational Portal, Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams.

The master’s program’s coursework, qualification work, and translation (production) practice are all completed by students while being supervised by the department’s faculty.

Bases of practice: Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University’s Translation Studies Department, Department of Oriental Languages, Department of International Relations, language center “European Choice” in Poltava, and LLC “Format Posluga” in Dnipro are the bases of translation (production) practice for bachelor’s degree holders. Translation Studies Department at the “Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University” and educational institutions where master’s students work serve as the foundation for scientific and pedagogical practice for students of higher education at the second (master’s) level.

The educational and methodological center “SvitLingva” was established on the foundation of the translation studies department with the goals of promoting more efficient use of the scientific potential of student youth at Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University; cooperating with legal and other academic institutions; and addressing the diverse interests of students of education, university employees, and other people in the field of philology and translation studies; the planning and execution of large-scale events, the management of translation services, and the establishment of favorable employment circumstances. The department’s instructors frequently arrange gatherings with students and recent graduates as part of the center’s activity, during which they share their translation expertise.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY

The department conducts scientific research in a number of areas, including “Intercultural, Translational, and Historical-Pedagogical Aspects of Philological Science and Problems of Teaching Philological Disciplines,” “Methodology of Teaching and Teaching Foreign Languages and Translation,” and “Methodology of Teaching Foreign Language and Translation to Students of Non-Linguistic Specialties.”

The department’s professors conduct research on issues related to intercultural communication, the profession of translation’s historical and pedagogical origins, methodological and sociolinguistic issues in translation studies, literature from English-speaking nations, and aspects of artistic translation, as well as methodological issues related to teaching foreign languages and translation.

Scientific and pedagogical staff of the Translation Studies Department publishes the results of their research in leading philological publications in Ukraine and abroad. The number of publications in journals registered in international scientific and metric databases, in particular Scopus and Web of Science, is constantly growing.

All lecturers of the department regularly participate in the work of authoritative international conferences both in Ukraine and abroad. The department is the organizer of the scientific and practical conference “Social and humanitarian problems of the 21st century: relevance, multipolarity, development prospects”, which will be held from 2022. Common themes of the conference are as follows:

The 21st-century globalization challenges and prospects.
Word, text, communication, and translation in 21st-century philology.
The 21st-century perspectives on philosophy, history, law, education, and science.
Contemporary culture and art.
The sociopsychological issues of the 21st century.
21st-century journalism theory and practice.

Participants in education at all levels actively present at numerous international and Ukrainian-only conferences.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND ACADEMIC MOBILITY

Translation studies department continues to expand the experience of international cooperation, which was started immediately after the creation of the department, with the aim of improving the methodological base for providing quality educational services.

The department maintains connections with foreign agencies and organizations that work in the fields of research and education both in and outside of Ukraine, particularly with the British Council in Ukraine (“English for Universities” project). The department’s instructors cooperate directly with the department of international relations and actively encourage students to take part in global projects, academic mobility initiatives, international conferences, and internships.

Since 2018, Associate Professor Svitlana Perova has been cooperating with the public organization “Progressilni” which has 4000 members and has been actively funded by The Friedrich Abbott Foundation and the Institute for Democracy and Social Progress in Germany. On September 21–23, 2018 Svitlana V. Perova took part in the “Training of Trainers” program for higher education professors, and she finished the three-day intensive “Teachers in Action” program successfully on May 17–19, 2019. Teachers from various higher education institutions participate in an event called Teachers in Action where they discuss concrete initiatives that will transform education in the future and put advocacy strategies into practice that have been tried out in local community engagement.

The establishment of the NGO “Progressilni” and the gathering of active professors capable of creating changes in higher education were outcomes of the “ToT for Teachers” trainings. As a result of taking part in these activities, education seekers engage in work that takes the form of a living library, energizers, and mind-mapping; they receive useful tools for advocating for teachers’ rights in social, legal, and labor aspects; they learn how to conduct negotiations, from developing a strategy and plan to choosing a team and putting the results into practice.

Lecturer of Translation Studies Department Yevheniya Ternievska took part in the project «Activate your strengths through art – boosting employability with creative methods in youth work» від Erasmus+ (Berlin, 2021). The purpose of participating was to acquire new knowledge and skills in non-formal education and improve their own creativity in working with youth, the exchange of international experience, the spread of ideas of tolerance, solidarity, patience, the search for a common approach in creating a comprehensive and fair society.

The outcomes of project participation include the development of informal and creative working relationships with young people and their application to one’s own activities. Another crucial skill was the ability to create and organize one’s own informal classes. It was also helpful to practice facilitation tools, which are useful in practical lessons, especially with older students. But the most crucial thing was to be aware of how our character traits and personal characteristics can turn into special opportunities that will help any activity be completed.

Lecturer of Translation Studies Department Olha Korinska participated in the grant programme Ukrainian Leaders Development Program, supported by the Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund, financed by U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in partnership with Global Ties U.S. The Ukrainian Leaders Development Program brought together teachers from the United States and Ukraine to share ideas, resources, and activities related to teaching and learning English. With the aim of promoting mutual cultural exchange, establishing contacts between Ukrainian and foreign professionals in the field of education, as well as giving Ukrainian higher education students the opportunity to practice communicating in English with native speakers, training facilitators will also participate in virtual classes with Ukrainian teachers and their students.

Positive dynamics can be seen in the academic mobility of the department’s students, who have the chance to study and intern abroad in the department’s specialties Thus, student of the 3rd year of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, specialty “035.041 Philology. Germanic languages and literatures (including translation), first language is English. Translation (English and a second foreign language (Chinese))” Mariana Maksilevych was able to participate in an inter-university mobility program with the University of Bath, Somerset County, Great Britain. University of Bath, is a public educational and research institution; founded and awarded a royal charter in 1966. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 32% of the university’s research projects received the highest possible rating of 4*, defined as world-leading in terms of originality, significance and integrity.
