HISTORY AND PRESENT

The Department of Foreign Languages for Specific Purposes was created in 2022 in connection with the internal reorganization of the structure and personnel of the faculty of foreign languages.

Today, the department employs 1 candidate of philological sciences, 2 candidates of pedagogical sciences, 2 senior teachers, 2 teachers. Three teachers have the academic title of associate professor, one of whom has the title of Honorary Professor of Taras Shevchenko LNU.

The department prepares highly qualified specialists, whose level of professional competence meets world education standards. Special emphasis in the educational process is placed on in-depth professional and practical training of students, which is provided by passing pedagogical, industrial and scientific-industrial practice in secondary schools and educational institutions of I-IV levels of accreditation.

Considerable attention at the department is paid to improving the qualifications of teachers and their professional self-improvement.

Theoretical achievements of the department. The teachers of the department implement the latest methods and techniques in teaching foreign languages. The department has developed the necessary educational and methodological materials that support the educational process: curricula, work programs of curriculum disciplines, lecture texts, plans for practical classes, didactic support for independent work, course and qualification papers.

All materials of educational and methodical complexes in the taught disciplines are constantly updated taking into account the achievements of modern methodical science. In classes, teachers solve a wide range of tasks, choosing optimal forms and methods of learning foreign languages, which contribute to the development of cognitive activity of students of higher education.

The department is headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor, Honorary Professor of Taras Shevchenko LNU Shpetna Svitlana Anatoliivna.

The main goal of the department’s activity: training of a qualified competitive specialist, capable of solving tasks and problems of a typical and innovative nature in the field of professional activity.

The main tasks of the department: formation of higher education graduates of professional competences and practical skills necessary for the performance of professional functions at a high level; improvement of abilities and skills to carry out effective communication between representatives of different cultures.

Strategic goals:

• increasing the scientific potential of the department;
• preservation and expansion of international cooperation of the department.

The department’s mission: training of socially responsible highly qualified specialists in accordance with the needs of the labor market in the conditions of European integration by using creative and innovative approaches to study and work.

Values adhered to by the department: professionalism and high qualification of teachers; innovation, student-centeredness, academic integrity, autonomy and freedom, individual approach, social, national and religious equality, humanism and tolerance, competitiveness of graduates.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY

The department is engaged in the preparation of bachelors in the discipline “Foreign language for specific purposes ” in educational and scientific institutes: history, international relations and socio-political sciences; culture and arts; pedagogy and psychology; trade, service technologies and tourism; physics, mathematics and information technologies; economy and business; physical education and sports; at the faculties of: Ukrainian philology and journalism; natural sciences, and also participates in the training of bachelors in the specialty “Secondary education. Language and literature (Russian, English)” and master’s degrees in the specialty “Philology. Slavic languages and literatures (including translation), the first is Russian. Language and literature (Russian).

During the course of study, students of the educational and qualification level “Bachelor” acquire knowledge in the following disciplines:

• Introduction to linguistics
• Basics of rhetoric / Linguistic studies
• History of language / Linguistic ecology
• Slavic ethnolinguistics
• Stylistics
• Old Slavic language
• Modern Russian language
• Practical course of the Russian language and speech culture
• Linguistic analysis of the text

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The research work of the department is an integral part of the research work of the university and is aimed at the formation of the strategy of the department’s scientific activity in the field of linguistics, the study of modern language processes and phenomena, as well as the practical application of scientific achievements in educational activities.

In order to activate the research work of students, the teaching staff of the department conducts scientific readings, presentations of scientific achievements and projects, and scientific and methodical seminars. The reports that received the highest rating are recommended for publication in university collections of scientific works of students and graduate students, and young scientists – for admission to postgraduate studies.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND ACADEMIC MOBILITY

The department carries out scientific relations with leading scientific centers and higher educational institutions of Ukraine and abroad: the department of general linguistics and Slavic philology of Berdyan State University, with the Technological University of Lanzhou (PRC), the department of Russian and French languages of the West Bohemian University. Pilsen (Czech Republic), Pomeranian Academy (Poland), etc.
