The Department of Literary Studies, Oriental Philology and Translation Studiesof the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology and Journalism at LuhanskTaras Shevchenko National University was established through the reorganization of the Department of Ukrainian and World Literature and the Oriental Philology and Translation Studies Department.
The department employs 14 lecturers, including 3 professors with doctoral degrees in philology, 8 associate professors (5 candidates of philological sciences and 3 candidates of pedagogical sciences). The department is headed by Dr. Olga OleksandrivnaKryzhanovska, a professor with a doctorate in philology.
The department᾽s mission is to prepare competitive specialists: teachers of the Ukrainian language and literature, foreign languages and world literature, philologists specializing in Oriental studies, and philologists specializing in translation.
Priority Tasks
- Creating favorable academic and pedagogical conditions for developing general and professional competencies of future specialists.
- Ensuring high-quality educational services in compliance with higher education standards and regulatory documentation governing the educational process.
- Organizing educational, scientific, and socio-humanitarian work in accordance with contemporary educational activity requirements.
- Implementing effective teaching methods, techniques, forms, tools, and modern information technologies.
- Researching current issues in philology and teaching methods for philological disciplines to continually enhance the professional level of lecturers and students.
Mission Statement: Active participation in fostering competencies and professional development of future specialists and citizens, shaping their worldviews, and cultivating self-awareness.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
The department operates based on the Ukrainian legislation on education and higher education and follows the normative legal framework of the university’s educational process (Charter of LuhanskTaras Shevchenko National University, Development Strategy 2019-2025, Regulations, and Procedures for Quality Assurance in Education).
Key areas of activity include the development, implementation, monitoring, and adjustment of educational and professional programs for training teachers of the Ukrainian language and literature, foreign languages, and world literature, as well as philologists specializing in Oriental studies and translation. The department also provides literary, linguistic, and methodological educational components; methodical support for educational and industrial practices; supervision of students’ scientific work, coursework, and master’s theses; and preparation and conduction of final assessments for graduates.
The department ensures the implementation of mandatory and elective educational components of the educational-professional programs for the following specialties:
- 014.01 Secondary Education (Ukrainian Language and Literature);
- 014.02 Secondary Education (Language and World Literature, with language specified);
- 035 Philology (specializations 035.041 – Germanic Languages and Literatures (including translation), first – English; 035.065 – Oriental Languages and Literatures (including translation), first – Chinese; 035.069 – Oriental Languages and Literatures (including translation), first – Japanese).
Educational levels covered:
- Bachelor’s and Master’sdegrees;
- Educational-Scientific Program for the third (educational-scientific) level under the specialty 035 Philology (PhD).
The primary educational components offered include:
- Fundamentals of Literary Theory;
- History of Ukrainian Literature;
- History of World Literature;
- Analysis of Artistic Works: Scientific and Educational Paradigms;
- Methods of Teaching Literature;
- Practical Courses in Chinese, Japanese, and English;
- Theory and Practice of Translation;
- Introduction to Translation Studies;
- Introduction to Foreign Philology;
- Fundamentals of Literary Translation.
Practical training is ensured through pedagogical, literary-local history, dialectological, translation, and scientific-pedagogical practices conducted in general, pre-tertiary, and higher education institutions, as well as at the Department of Literary Studies, Oriental Philology, and Translation, the International Relations Department of the university, and other institutions.
The department hosts the educational and methodological center “Svit Lingva” aimed at creating opportunities to meet the diverse interests of students, university staff, and others in philology and translation studies.
SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY
The members of the Department of Literary Studies, Oriental Philology and Translation Studies explore key topics in Shevchenko studies, the literature of Ukraine’s “Executed Renaissance,” and contemporary Ukrainian literature. Their research also includes teaching methodologies for literature in secondary schools and literary studies in higher education institutions. Additionally, they examine the poetics of children’s literature, the mythopoetics of artistic texts, and the works of writers from Slobozhanshchyna. Comparative and typological studies of Ukrainian and foreign literature are conducted, along with research on intercultural communication, historical and pedagogical origins of Oriental studies and translation professions in Ukraine, as well as methodological and sociolinguistic issues in Oriental studies and translation theory. Other research areas include the literature of English-speaking countries, China, Japan, and aspects of literary translation; and methodological challenges in teaching foreign languages, particularly Chinese and Japanese.
The department is engaged in three scientific research projects:
- 1. “Ukrainian Literature in Multicultural Discourse” (State Registration No. 0118U000836, registered on June 20, 2018);
- 2. “Cultures of the Peoples Whose Languages We Study” (State Registration No. 0106U008125, registered on June 20, 2018);
- 3. “Intercultural, Translation, and Historical-Pedagogical Aspects of Philological Science and Issues in Teaching Philological Disciplines” (State Registration No. 0122U201607, registered on December 1, 2022).
The department acts as an organizer or co-organizer of annual scientific conferences, including the international conferences “Ukraine-China: Dialogue of Cultures,” “Modern Trends in Oriental Studies,” the all-Ukrainian scientific and practical conference “Language and Literature in Multicultural Discourse,” and the scientific and practical conference “Socio-Humanitarian Issues of the 21st Century: Relevance, Multipolarity, and Development Prospects.”
The department’s members publish scientific articles, participate in international and national scientific conferences, seminars, and roundtables, and serve as academic advisors to students participating in student research competitions and conferences.

RESEARCH WORK WITH STUDENTS
The members of the Department of Literary Studies, Oriental Philology and Translation Studiesactively involves students in research activities. Problem-based student groups have been created to work on topics such as “Trends in the Development of Contemporary Ukrainian Literature” and “Modern Interpretation of the Classical Literary Heritage.” The department also hosts a scientific discussion club for future Orientalists.
Each year, as part of the LuhanskTaras Shevchenko National University Science Days, the department organizes scientific readings with student participation, encouraging them to engage in research activities. These efforts result in the publication of articles and abstracts, presentations at student scientific and practical conferences, seminars, and participation in student research competitions.
SOCIAL AND HUMANITARIAN WORK
The social and humanitarian work of the Department of Literary Studies, Oriental Philology and Translation Studies is based on the concept of social and humanitarian work of the State Institution “Luhansk National University named after Taras Shevchenko.” It is aimed at preparing specialists who are guided in their professional activities and daily lives by a deeply conscious sense of belonging to the national history, culture, and memory of Ukraine, to general civilizational values, and who consciously adhere to state laws and moral norms.
The department members and students conduct meetings of the Youth Club of Eastern Cultures. Representatives of other cultures, writers, journalists, translators, scientists, and graduates from various years are invited to these meetings.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND ACADEMIC MOBILITY
The department continues to expand its experience in international cooperation and maintains connections with international agencies and organizations in the fields of education and science operating in Ukraine and abroad, including the British Council in Ukraine (the “English for Universities”.
Department’s members actively collaborate with the Department of International Relations and encourage students to participate in international projects and academic mobility programs. They also take part in international conferences and internships.
The department’s members study the experiences of universities and Oriental studies centers in European countries and the United States, including the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO, France), the University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland), and the University of Turku (Finland), where Eastern languages are taught and researched.
