History of the Department

The history of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology is connected with the history of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University.

The Department of Romance and Germanic Philology is one of the leading departments at the Educational and Research Institute of Philology and Journalism, established in 1992. The Department is a core department for those structural subdivisions where English, German, French, and Spanish are the first or second specialty. Currently, the department has 8 teachers, including 1 professor, a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, 3 associate professors, candidates of philological and pedagogical sciences, and senior lecturers and assistants. The Department is headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences Naila Khairulina.

The department’s main goal is to provide fundamental and professional training of qualified specialists for teaching and research.

Priority tasks of the department: development, implementation, monitoring and correction of educational and professional training programs for teachers of general secondary education, philologists, and translators; organization of training in literary and methodological educational components; methodological support of educational and industrial practices; management of students’ research work, term papers, and master’s theses; preparation and conduct of final certification of graduates; work on the scientific topic “Professional Training of Specialists in Romance and Germanic Languages in the City of Kyiv”.

The mission of the Department: fundamental training of highly qualified specialists capable of proactively realizing their creative potential in the profession.

Educational Activities

The educational activity of the department is to implement philological and methodological educational components of educational and professional training programs for applicants for the first (bachelor’s) and second (master’s) levels of higher education in the following specialties:

014.01 Secondary education (first, bachelor’s level):

  • English language and literature (full-time/extramural);
  • German and English Language and Literature (Full-time/ Part-time);
  • French and English Language and Literature (Full-time);
  • Spanish and English Language and Literature (Full-time).

014.01 Secondary education (second, master’s level):

  • English Language and Foreign Literature (Full-time/ Part-time);
  • German Language and Foreign Literature (Full-time/ Part-time);
  • French Language and Foreign Literature (Full-time/ Part-time).

035.01\02 Philology (second, master’s level):

  • Language and Literature (English) (Full-time/extra-mural);
  • Language and Literature (German) (Full-time/extramural);
  • Language and Literature (French) (Full-time/ Part-time).

Ukrainian language and literature. Language and Literature (English) (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees).

The Department provides teaching of specialized disciplines for philological specialties, including: Practical English, Practical English Grammar, Practical English Phonetics, Practice of Speaking and Writing, Business English, Lexicology, Stylistics, Theoretical Grammar, Theoretical Phonetics, History of the English Language, Structural Typology, Topical Issues of Germanic Studies, Interpretation of Literary Text, Theory and Practice of Translation, Linguistic and Country Studies, Language and Intercultural Communication, Linguistic Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics, etc.

The professional level of teaching courses in English, German, French, and Spanish philology is improved through high-quality methodological support, the introduction of modern teaching methods, computerization of the learning process, the use of computer labs and the Internet, and the development of distance learning courses. The department’s teachers are constantly improving their qualifications, undergoing internships abroad and in Ukraine. The geography of their study and internship destinations is diverse: Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Finland, Spain, Germany, France, China, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Poland. The department’s teachers take an active part in conferences, seminars of various levels, and international research programs. They actively cooperate with the British Council within the framework of the English for Universities project. The trainings of the program (English for Specific Purposes, English for Academic Purposes, English for Specific purposes for Newly Qualified, Teaching at University in 21st Century, Academic Teaching Excellence) provide an opportunity to get acquainted with modern approaches to teaching professional disciplines in English, the language of professional orientation and English for academic purposes, to improve the level of foreign language proficiency.


Scientific Activity

Teachers of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology are working on the research topic ‘Professional Training of Specialists in Romance and Germanic Languages in the Intercultural Space: Challenges of the Present’. Its goal and objectives are realized in the research of the department’s teachers in the following areas: Topical issues of Romance and Germanic philology, translation studies, modern strategies of intercultural communication in the European space, the originality of Romance and Germanic literature, innovative methods of teaching Romance and Germanic languages, peculiarities of using a foreign language for professional purposes.

The academic staff of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology is provided by highly qualified certified teachers who continuously improve their knowledge and teaching skills.

Research Work with Students

Teachers of the Romance and Germanic Philology Department actively involve students in research work. In cooperation with the international educational platform Open British University (Open U), extracurricular informal training was organized for 1-4 year students and master’s students of all specialties of the Department. All students successfully completed the following courses: ‘Everyday English-1,2’, “English in the World Today”, “English Pronunciation in Use”, “Fundamentals of English Grammar”, “Intermediate German”, “Intermediate French”, “Intermediate Spanish”, “The Theory of Translation”, “The Overview of English Literature”. Khairulina N.F., Shekhavtsova S.O., Tyshakova L.T., Yunina O.Ye., Blednova O.H., Sklyarova I.V. are permanent scientific supervisors of students in writing scientific articles, abstracts, competitive essays, etc. Shapovalova L.V. supervised students who won prizes in the All-Ukrainian student scientific competitions: In 2019, V. Mayorenko took third place in the second stage of the All-Ukrainian competition of student research papers in Romance and Germanic languages. 2020 Mayorenko V.I. took second place in the second stage of the All-Ukrainian competition of student research papers in Romano-Germanic languages. 2022 Chugaieva M.S., 4th-year student majoring in 014 SO Language and Literature (French, English), took 1st place in the 1st stage of the All-Ukrainian competition of student research papers in 2022. The second stage was not held due to the outbreak of war.
