Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation at the ER ICA
9.5.2023
The ER ICA honored the memory of those who died in the Second World War and during Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine.
On May 8, the Educational and Research Institute of Culture and Arts celebrated the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation with a general information hour. Teachers and students honoured the memory of all those who died during the Second World War and during Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine with a minute of silence. By introducing this memorable date, Ukraine sought to join the European tradition of commemorating the victory in World War II, honoring all fighters against Nazism and war victims.
Sofia Zipova, a 1st-year student majoring in “Graphic Design” conducted a master class on making a poppy brooch, because a red poppy is a symbol of remembrance of the Second World War both in Ukraine and Europe.
The graphic image of a poppy, the author of which is the Kharkiv designer Serhii Mishakin, is a kind of allusion: on the one hand, it represents a poppy flower, on the other, a bloody bullet mark. The poppy also has many meanings in Ukrainian mythology: it is a symbol of the sun, the infinity of existence and the transience of life, lush beauty, will, pride, sleep, poison, a talisman against evil forces, as well as a Cossack boy, blood, death.
Now everyone who attended the master class will be able to wear this symbol every year on May 8, as a symbol of remembrance of all victims of the Second World War.
