Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation 2023

University management, employees and students of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University honored the victims of Nazism on the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation.

Today, May 8, 2023, the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation is dedicated to the victory over Nazism, as well as honoring all its victims as well as all the victims of that and the current war.

The Second World War, which lasted from 1939 to 1945, was one of the bloodiest and largest armed conflicts in human history. More than 60 countries took part in it. Europe and East Asia, Africa and the Middle East, the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean were covered by hostilities. Between 50 and 85 million people died. Ukraine was one of the main battlefields of the Second World War, and a space where totalitarian regimes – Nazi and Soviet – committed mass crimes.

Oksana Mykolaivna Drypan – secretary of the Council and activists of the 1st micro-district were present at the event together with representatives of the university.

On the territory of the Lubny Specialized School No. 10, near the memorial sign “To the Red Army – prisoners of the German-fascist concentration camp”, which was located here in 1941-1942, those present honored the memory of the dead by laying flowers.

A small exhibition with the names of those killed in the modern war against the Russian aggressor was created in the local schools for this important day, where the Rector of LTSNU Olena KARAMAN and the head of the Primary Trade Union of the University Volodymyr MOROZ held a small meeting.

Volodymyr Moroz noted that for the second year in a row, Ukrainians celebrate this memorable date in the conditions of a modern full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, which is called the biggest war in Europe since the Second World War. Many of the horrors of war, which were previously associated with the last global conflict, became a reality in Ukraine as a result of the war crimes of the Russian army and the leadership of the Russian Federation. The lists of dead university teachers and students, which can be seen at the “Never Again” exhibition, will continue to be updated.

Volodymyr Petrovych said: “Today we honor the memory of those who died in the Second World War and those who died from 2014 to this day in the conditions of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation. During this war, Russia has committed many terrible crimes against both the Ukrainian military and the civilian population. But we will persevere! We have defeated fascism, we will also defeat racism!”

Rector Olena KARAMAN emphasized that during the Second World War both the German military and the Soviets committed real terror on Ukrainian lands. These are numerous crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of genocide. Therefore, Ukraine is the country that suffered the greatest losses in 1939-1945 and continues to bear losses even today… She briefly spoke about some facts from the history of the World War and why Ukraine now celebrates the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation together with Europe and the USA dedicated to those who died in the Second World War.

Also, the Rector emphasized that since 2014, the red poppy has been a symbol of remembrance of the Second World War, which is recognized in the world as a symbol of memory for those who died in battles from the time of the First World War until today.

The head of the student self-government, Ania Berendiaieva, paid her respects to the victims, and thanked the military, who defend our freedom and the sovereignty of our country, on behalf of the entire student body.

Dasha Potapenko, a student of our university, read I. Halyshko’s poem “They are waiting at home”, the words of which struck everyone present to the core.

During the meeting, the memory of all the victims was honored with a moment of silence, and at the end, flowers were placed at the created exposition dedicated to the victims of 2014-2023.

Eternal and bright memory to Ukrainian soldiers who gave their lives in the Second World War. We remember their feat and all the crimes of the Hitler regime. We pray for our military who are fighting against Russian Nazism.

We wish all of us to soon celebrate another great Victory Day. Glory to Ukraine!
