The Faculty of Foreign Languages celebrated the Chinese New Year
On February 14, the first meeting of the Youth Club of Eastern Cultures of the II term was held at the Faculty of Foreign Languages. The topic of the meeting was the Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival (春节), which was celebrated in China this year on January, 23.
The meeting was opened by Olena Zhuikova, a 3rd-year student, who prepared a presentation and showed a video on the topic “Traditions of celebrating the New Year in China”.
Yuliya Malakhova told the audience about the features of the New Year celebration in China, life in China during the celebration period, gifts and New Year’s decoration. Traditional New Year’s fireworks in China are associated with a special legend about the Nian monster.
Darya Perepadya shared information about the 12 animals of the Chinese horoscope, introduced one of the legends about their origin. The participants discussed the characteristics of animals that became symbols of the twelve-year cycle.
Teachers and their students learning Chinese and Japanese analyzed the forms of drawing the hieroglyphs that denote these animals in the Chinese horoscope. After comparing the writing in Chinese and Japanese, they found that in both languages they are identical, but the reading is radically different.
Thanks to all who participated in the meeting. We are looking forward to the next event.
