Japanese teacher O. Borzova held a methodical seminar on the topic of “The importance of Using the English Language in the Process of Learning the Main Foreign Language”
On January 10, 2022, another methodical seminar was held at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, in which faculty teachers took part. O. Borzova, a teacher of the Japanese language, gave a speech on the topic of “The importance of using the English language in the process of learning a basic foreign language.”
Borzova substantiated the need for learners to have at least A2-B1 English level for learning basic foreign language because of a large layer of borrowed vocabulary in other languages in general and in Asian languages in particular. Since the Japanese language is synthetic, the speaker drew attention to the fact that often in the process of learning the grammar of the Japanese language, English grammar is referred to in practical classes, because it also shows some signs of syntheticity. This can help learners to draw parallels between the two languages. Mrs. Oleksandra noted that she uses this technique also because of a large number of pseudo-anglicisms in the Japanese vocabulary, which out of context can cause difficulties for the translators, especially when they don`t speak English well and are not familiar with the peculiarities of Japanese word formation. With the help of a presentation, the speaker demonstrated examples of English loanwords in the Japanese language, drew attention to the peculiarities of their pronunciation and construction.
Faculty teachers who participated in the seminar shared their thoughts on the proposed method and discussed its practical effectiveness. The participants agreed that this way really develops students` ability to think using the language they are learning and it contributes to better and faster development of speaking skills.
The Department of Oriental Languages thanks all participants for their sincere interest in the topic of the seminar and hopes that the speaker’s achievements will be useful to colleagues.
