Meeting of the Club of Eastern Cultures
9.1.2023
On November 28, a meeting of the Club of Oriental Cultures took place at the Department of Oriental Languages.
The theme of the meeting was Eastern cuisine. The first-fourth year students studying oriental languages presented reports on the culinary traditions of Japan and China. The 2nd year student A. Nazarenko talked about serving puffer fish – the most expensive and most dangerous delicacy.
V. Rybchan prepared a presentation about Century Eggs, or sunhuadan (Chinese: 松花蛋), also known as canned eggs, imperial eggs or thousand-year eggs. The students were interested in learning about Chinese canned food and delicacy, the production process of which consists in canning mainly ducks, much less often – chicken or quail eggs in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, quicklime and rice husks from several weeks to several months.
S. Esakova, a 3rd-year student, shared information about the dishes prepared for the Chinese New Year (Chinese: 春报, literally Spring Festival — the most important of traditional Chinese holidays. And the answer to the question “Why do the Chinese eat with chopsticks instead of using more convenient forks and spoons?” was given by the student D. Mykhailova in her report.
We invite everyone to participate in our meetings. You will be able to learn a lot of interesting things about China and Japan, share your thoughts and impressions, take part in discussions and debates. By the way, the topic of the next meeting is the musical culture of the countries of the East. We are waiting for you, dear readers! See you again next time!
