“Light a Memory Candle”

Students of our colleges joined the all-Ukrainian campaign “Light a Memory Candle”.

The Holodomor of 1932-1933 became the largest act of genocide of the Ukrainian people, which was organized by the leadership of the Communist Party of Ukraine (b) and the government of the USSR in 1932-1933 by creating an artificial mass famine. Living conditions aimed at the extermination of the Ukrainian nation were created by the complete removal of all food products.

Resolution of the Central Committee of the CPSU(b) and the Soviet People’s Committee of the USSR dated January 22, 1933, signed by Stalin and Molotov, prohibited Ukrainians from leaving the USSR and the Kuban for bread. The Stalinist regime declared famine in Ukraine a non-existent phenomenon and on this basis refused the help offered by numerous non-governmental organizations, in particular the Ukrainian communities abroad and the International Red Cross. Millions of Ukrainians died.

Every year, on the fourth Saturday of the month, Ukraine commemorates the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holodomor, introduced by the Decree of the President of Ukraine in 1998. In 2006, the Holodomor of 1932–1933 was recognized as genocide by the Law of Ukraine.

Colleges of LTSNU joined the all-Ukrainian campaign “Light a Memory Candle” in memory of the victims of the famine.
