Virtual English Language Educator

The Faculty of Foreign Languages held a meeting with representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, during which the implementation of Virtual English Language Educator programme was discussed.

On November 18, the Faculty of Foreign Languages held an introductory meeting with representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, Regional English Language Office, regarding the implementation of Virtual English Language Educator programme on the basis of the Faculty of Foreign Languages in the second semester of the academic year 2022 – 2023.

The programme aims to provide support to higher education institutions of Ukraine by establishing cooperation between the institutions and highly qualified teachers from the USA who carry out their professional activities in the direction of teaching English to those who speak other languages. Such online teachers contribute to the study of the English language all over the world, including in Ukraine, and also participate in issues of public diplomacy. Virtual tutors have an advanced degree (at least master’s degree in TESOL or related field) and significant teaching experience.

The following were present at the inaugural meeting: from the US Embassy in Ukraine – director of English language teaching programs at the US Embassy in Ukraine Lottie Baker; Assistant Cultural Attaché of the US Embassy in Ukraine Lilia Shylo; Regional English Language Office project coordinator Alyona Sukhinina; from LTSNU – Acting Dean of the Faculty of Foreign languages, Head of the International Relations Department Iryna Myhovych; Vice Dean in charge of Educative Affairs, Liudmyla Ovcharova; Associate Professor of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology Olha Unina; Associate Professor of the Translation Studies Department Svitlana Perova.

During the meeting, the most important points related to the successful implementation of the programme at the Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University were outlined, related to the formation of the schedule for students and guest lecturers, the composition of student groups for work, the format of guest practical-theoretical courses, the possibility of holding English-language clubs, etc.

It should be noted that the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University has a long and successful history of cooperation with the US Embassy in Ukraine, which partly dates back to the organization and holding of The 8th American Studies Summer Institute American Identity: Regionalism and Nationhood and continuing to support the activities of the information and cultural center “Window on America” in Starobilsk, during 2015-2022.

The implementation of the Virtual English Language Educator programme on the basis of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of LTSNU will be the next step in effective cooperation between the two institutions.
