On November 9, in the difficult conditions of today, caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine, the staff of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University, led by rector Olena Karaman, celebrated a great holiday – the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language. It was started on November 9, 1997, when the President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, in support of the initiative of public organizations and taking into account the important role of the Ukrainian language in the consolidation of Ukrainian society, issued Decree No. 1241/97 “On the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language”. According to the Orthodox calendar, on this day, the memory of the venerable Nestor the Chronicler, a follower of the creators of the Slavic script Cyril and Methodius, is commemorated. He was a writer-hagiographer, the founder of ancient Russian historiography, the first historian of Kyivan Rus, a thinker, a scientist, a monk of the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery.
At 11:00 a.m., students and employees of the university, together with the whole country, participated in the writing of the 22nd All-Ukrainian Radio Dictation of National Unity in three university locations, namely in Poltava, Lubny, and Myrhorod. The peculiarity of this year’s dictation was that it was read by Ukrainian theater and film actress, Hero of Ukraine Ada Rogovtseva. The purpose of this significant national flash mob is not to test one’s own literacy, but to show the whole world the unity of the Ukrainian people.
Language is our national weapon, the foundation of statehood, so we sincerely congratulate everybody. Glory to Ukraine!
