Remembrance Lesson

On February 4 Starobilsk College and College of LNU conducted a remembrance lesson “Kruty is Our Memory and Our Pain”.

During the event participants paid the tribute to the memory of died for Ukrainian independence. First year students under the supervision of O. M. Melnychenko prepared interesting report and told about the Battle of Kruty took place on January 29, 1918 for Ukrainian independence.

Event participants watched interesting documentaries, heard the reports on the attempts to stifle an offensive of Soviet forces advanced toward Kyiv. These attempts were performed by Student Battalion, a unit of Cadet school and senior pupils of gymnasia commanded by Omelchenko at the railway station Kruty. The Red Army overnumbered that is why they broke the defenders. Some historical resources tell that 260 persons were killed, 28 were taken captive and tortured, 4 were taken to Kharkiv for interrogation and nobody knows what happened then. Those who survived managed to destroy railway road and to block Soviet forces for several days.

The Battle of Kruty proved the youth’s willingness to fight for the ideas of Ukrainian revolution. It is a symbol of national honour. 98 years intervened. Today our youth takes a stand for the independence of Ukraine by devoting their lives.

At the end everybody performed the anthem of Ukraine.
