The Club of Oriental Cultures

The meeting of the Club of Oriental Cultures was held at the Department of Oriental Languages on the Faculty of Foreign Languages which was devoted to autumn holidays in China and Japan.

On October 27, the first meeting of the Club of Oriental Cultures was held on the Faculty of Foreign Languages. The meeting was attended by students studying Japanese and Chinese. The meeting was devoted to autumn holidays, traditionally celebrated in China and Japan.

The first to speak was 3-year student M. Kuznetsov, who honoured the National Day of the People’s Republic of China (中华人民共和国国庆节) and gave a talk devoted to the peculiarities of celebrating this national holiday in China. New members of the club, our first-year students didn`t stand aside either. P. Sazonova gave a talk about Mao Zedong, who announced the establishment of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, 1949.

Students who study Japanese as a foreign language shared information about traditional holidays in Japan. O. Voropaeva, a 2nd-year student, prepared a presentation on “Japanese Thanksgiving Day”, and Nazarenko A. gave a talk about funny Japanese autumn holidays. D. Gonchar, who joined the program “Language and Literature (Japanese, English)”, prepared an interesting presentation on Japanese urban legends. The reports made by S. Yesakova, M. Tkach, I. Khimochka   and D. Derevyanko were devoted to the special features of the “Mid-autumn Festival” in China.

The teacher of department O. Borzova also took the floor, stunning the audience with the mystical poem “Tomino’s Hell” (トミノの地獄). She also analyzed its lexical and semantic features and introduced legends and tales associated with the poem.
