Victory at the Euro – 2022
9.8.2022
The student confidently won victory as part of the Junior National Team of Ukraine at the Euro 2022.
The junior national team of Ukraine (U-18), despite a difficult start, managed to turn the tide of the game and won a convincing victory over the Austrian national team in the first match of Euro-2022 (division B) – 29:26. The Ukrainians took the lead before the break and led throughout the second half. There was a confident game of the national team of Ukraine and a well-deserved victory. The best player of the match was Dmytro Redkin, second-year student of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University.
Following the successes of our boys, we can watch the schedule of games broadcast on ehftv: on August 9 at 15:00 there will be a game between Ukraine and Slovakia; August 11 at 13:00 – Ukraine – Estonia.
Oleh Leontiev, a senior lecturer of the Sports Disciplines Department said the following during the interview:
1. Oleh Viktorovych, as far as we know, in the summer of this year, students of our university performed in three national teams of Ukraine at once. What is it connected with?
Indeed, our boys played in three national teams of Ukraine: Oleksii Novikov in the national beach handball team, Oleksandr Maiboroda, Danylo Zorkin, Dmytro Redkin, Mykyta Lytvynenko – in the national team until 2020 year of bearth, Dmytro Redkin – in the national team until 2018 year of birth.
This is related to the fact that back in 2014, when we moved from Luhansk, the university management set us the task of not losing our position in sports, and in particular handball. We managed to do something. In addition to the participation of our awardees in various national teams of Ukraine, our students as part of the national team of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University took the second place at the Championship of Ukraine among students in 2019.
In 2021 our students became silver medalists at the Ukrainian University Games. It was for the first time in the history of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University. 112 universities of Ukraine took part in these competitions, the competition was fierce, because they were held at a high level. I will mention only one fact – the rectors of the HEIs found a “mechanism” so that student-athletes of these educational institutions, who live and play in professional clubs in Europe, come and take part in competitions for the honor of their educational institutions.
2. From which regions of Ukraine do handball athletes study at our university?
Currently, boys from Kropyvnytskyi, Zaporizhzhia, Skvir (Kyiv region), Melitopol, Luhansk region, Dnipropetrovsk region are studying at our university. The entire team of the ER IPES conducts career orientation work in other cities as well, but we have our own specifics, so we invite not only school graduates, but also athletes who already have certain achievements in sports (handball).
3. Dmytro Redkin played for the Ukrainian U20 national team, and now plays for the U18 national team. Why so?
Dmytro Redkin, a second-year student of the ER IPES, already played for the Ukrainian U-20 national team this year, and now he is playing for the U-18 national team in Romania. For him, this is a significant achievement, because at this age, 2 years is a big difference.
4. What are your plans for the future?
Despite the acute situation, we continue to work, therefore, 2 men from Zaporizhzhia are enrolled in the 1st bachelor’s course, and 1 person from Odesa and 1 – from Melitopol are enrolled in the 1st master’s course. So we will train and win awards. I wish everyone success, health, and most importantly, peace!
Today at 15:00 in the second round, our team will play against Slovakia, so we are waiting for another victory.
