Unity as the Basis of the National Identity of Ukrainians

The ER IHIRSPS held a number of events dedicated to the Unity Day.

On February 17, the ER IHIRSPS hosted a number of events dedicated to the celebration of Unity Day. In particular, the head of the Ukrainian History Department, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Oleksandr Naboka, held a popular science online lecture for students of the Educational and Research Institute of History, International Relations and Socio-Political Sciences and the Educational and Research Institute of Economics and Business: “Unity as the Basis of the National Identity of Ukrainians.”

The speaker noted that “unity” as a state and national value of the Ukrainian people began to form during the stay of Ukrainian lands under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires in the 19th century. Then the leading figures of the Ukrainian national revival from both parts of Ukraine proclaimed that political borders are not an obstacle to their identification as representatives of the single people.

This idea, according to Oleksandr Naboka, was practically implemented on January 22, 1919, when the Act of Unification of the UNR and ZUNR was proclaimed. And although the then military-political realities did not allow this unity to be preserved, the memory of it was kept in the historical consciousness of Ukrainian society. This feeling, as the speaker noted, became one of the leading ones in the minds of Ukrainian patriots during the military conflict of 2014-2022.
