“Kontakt” celebrates its 15th anniversary

For 15 years, the Department of Journalism and Publishing has been issuing a student educational newspaper.

This year the magazine “Kontakt” celebrates its anniversary. From the time of its foundation and until now, it has been tirelessly promoting the implementation of the creative and professional skills of higher education applicants majoring in “Journalism”. “Kontakt” went through the war, forced evacuation and restoration, presenting on its pages all the milestones of the social life of the East Ukrainian students.

The initiative to create a student educational newspaper of the Department of Journalism and Publishing of the State Institution “Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University” “Contact” belongs to the founder of the Department, Doctor of Philology, Professor Valentyna Halych. Already in the first year of the department’s existence, active work began on the implementation of an information project designed to unite students and undergraduates of four specialties, which the department was preparing at that time – “Journalism”, “Publishing”, “Advertising and Public Relations”, “Media Communications”. Thus, in the spring of 2006, the first issue of the student educational newspaper “Kontakt” appeared, which had a frequency of 4 times a year and was distributed only in paper form, without electronic correspondence.

The educational newspaper “Kontakt” from the very beginning of its existence was published exclusively by students under the guidance of teachers of the department and already in the first years of life received high recognition in Ukraine as the best example of youth press: it was twice awarded in the All-Ukrainian competition of student newspapers, which took place in Zaporizhzhia (2008 – 2013), received “Nika” in the regional competition of youth press (2008), and at the All-Ukrainian exhibition of youth publications “Youth Accent – 2011” in Zaporizhzhia took the honorable second place, and in 2013 – the first place.

Each problem-thematic group “Kontakt” was identified in specific headings of the publication, which were permanent, and some of them have remained constant until now. So, in the section “Events” materials of information genres are published about the news of the university. The column “Student Life”, as the name suggests, described the curiosities and adventures of student youth. The section “Figure”, as a rule, in the genre of interviews or essay form, reproduced the images of the most outstanding personalities of the Luhansk region associated with the life of the university, or other prominent figures of modern cultural or socio-political life. In the section “What We Live By” the most reverent problems of the students are presented. It is here that you can notice the first attraction to analytics and artistic journalism of future media professionals. The section “Cultural Life” described news in the field of culture, reviews of artistic and theatrical achievements, descriptions of cultural and historical monuments, etc. “Ukraine is the only one” – the most patriotic topic of the newspaper. Here, as in the previously described rubric, the attraction to analytics, reflections, philosophical generalizations was revealed. These sections of “Kontakt” most clearly represent the creative heritage of students and undergraduates of the Department of Journalism and Publishing, who have already mastered the theory of analytical genres. “Word-Playing on the Palms” – the most poetic section of the newspaper. Here are the first artistic attempts of the applicants’ pen in artistic and artistic-journalistic genres. The newspaper ended with the heading “Advertising Creative”, created by students majoring in “Advertising and Public Relations”, who demonstrated their skills in the field of advertising design and communication.

The creation of the layout, artistic and graphic design of the publication were entrusted to the students majoring in “Publishing and Editing”.

In 2021, “Kontakt” celebrates its 15th anniversary. Now the jubilee issue No. 3 of the magazine for 2021 is presented. Today’s “Kontakt” has been replenished with new headings – “Holidays”, “Traditions”, “Profession”, “Actual”, “Photopublicism”. The third-year student Yulia Mezhenska took over the function of the editor from the students, the layout belongs to the master’s student Tetiana Kononenko. The student educational newspaper “Kontakt” is a brilliant chronicler of the life of the Faculty of Ukrainian Philology and Social Communications, on the pages of which the professional skills of future journalists, publicists, editors, bloggers and publishers are honed. The prospect of its development is the creation of an electronic publication of the same name, capable of fulfilling the information requests of the entire educational institution, becoming a communication platform for applicants for various areas of training and preferences. Such an online publication could revive the interactive space of the university website and expand the possibilities of using dual and non-formal education.
