Tour of the university main building

An online excursion was held for the education applicants of the Institute of History, International Relations and Socio-Political Sciences.

Recently, an unusual educational event was held at the ER IHIRSPS. First and second year students took part in an online experimental tour of the Red Building of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University, which was presented by Oleksandr Naboka, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Head of the Department of Ukrainian History.

According to the teacher, close acquaintance with the famous history of the building, which was built at the beginning of the XX century, led to his desire to create an excursion for students. Its author noted that he seeks to make this event traditional – it should be held regularly, on September 1, for freshmen who have just enrolled in training.

The first part of the online lecture was devoted to the history of the Red Building of the University, which was created as the building of the city women’s gymnasium in 1905 – 1908. Participants of the event had the opportunity to get acquainted with the appearance and everyday life of students and teachers of the gymnasium, thanks to a series of old photographs, which were posted in a specialized Facebook group “Starobilsk – an Open-Air Museum”. The photographs of the building of the first half of the twentieth century presented on the page allowed also to compare its appearance then and today.

In the second part of the excursion, the students virtually got acquainted with the preserved places in the Red Building, which have preserved “the spirit of the era and antiquity”. Among such places is the old basement, where, according to urban legends, there was an entrance to the famous Starobilsk underground passages.

Oleksandr Naboka also drew the attention of the event participants to the ancient railings that have been preserved on the central staircase between the first and second floors of the Red Building. As you know, today it is an important symbolic place where traditional photo sessions of the University graduates take place. He also spoke about the history of the assembly hall, where at the beginning of the twentieth century regular points were arranged for female students of the gymnasium.

The event was timed to coincide with the next International Students’ Day.
