Participation in archaeological excavations

A student majoring in History took part in the archaeological excavations of the Volyn region.

An important area of work of the Department of History of Ukraine at Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University is to attract students-historians to work in archaeological expeditions organized jointly with the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

In recent years, the activities of two archaeological teams have been resumed at the University. This, in particular, the Luhansk archaeological team, which since 2018 has been fruitfully working on the basis of the historical and archaeological reserve Olvia (Mykolaiv region) and the Luhansk archaeological team named after Serhii Loktiushev, which in recent years fruitfully investigated ancient archaeological sites in the Starobilsk region.

It should be noted that in both cases the department works under the supervision of the leading researchers of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: Alla Buiskykh, Iryna Sheiko, Serhii Telezhenko. This cooperation has become even stronger this year. In particular, the  4th year student majoring in “Secondary Education (History)” Andrii Ovcharenko took part in the rescue archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine near Rivne, Volyn region, led by leading scientists Oleksii Voitiuk and Serhii Telizhenko. Similar types of work are regularly carried out by the Institute in different parts of Ukraine for the purpose of researching archaeological sites where construction is planned.

It should be noted that this is not the first archaeological experience of Andrii, who since 2019 has been actively involved in the research of ancient Olvia, a Neolithic settlement near the city of Starobilsk. He is the co-author of several articles on archaeological topics.

This time the future historian took part in the study of a multi-layered settlement-camp near the city of Rivne, in which the remains of the material culture of the ancient Trypillians, the Bronze Age and Kievan Rus were found. In addition to excavations, Andrii also took part in the restoration of important archaeological artifacts – in particular, in the process of restoring the pot of the Gorodets-Zdovbit culture (end of the 3rd – first quarter of the 2nd millennium BC), decorated with a beautiful rope ornament.

In his free time, Andrii also had the opportunity with interesting archaeological and ethnographic collections of the Volyn Regional Museum of Local Lore.

The Department of the History of Ukraine sincerely thanks everyone involved in this stage of the professional development of the future historian. We hope that our students will continue to take part in archaeological expeditions in different parts of Ukraine.
