The Hour of Memory

The Institute of Culture and Arts hosted an hour of memory, timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the memory of those killed in Babyn Yar.

Mass shootings of Jews began 80 years ago in Babyn Yar. In just two days, more than 33 thousand people were shot. For two years, the shootings of Jews and not only continued, and Babyn Yar in Kyiv became one of the global symbols of the Holocaust.

During the event, the advisers of the academic groups told their students the history of the Holocaust, its further psychological impact on people, and how those terrible events are now reflected in art. They discussed the installations “Mirror Field”, “The Road of Sorrow”, monocular “Look at the Past”.

The students got to know platforms like Babynyar (https://babynyar.org/ua) and Red Point of Memory (https://edu.babynyar.org/about), where living stories are collected in interviews and archives, photographs, letters and documents, a 3D model of Babyn Yar was created.

The film “Jewish Cemetery in Poltava” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDSatuDvk-o), which was created by students majoring in “Fine Arts, Decorative Arts and Restoration”, was also revised. Each city, village has its own Babyn Yar, but, unfortunately, we know even less about these places.

Each of us must make every effort to prevent similar genocides in the future. The least we can do is remember these tragic events of the past, take an interest in the history of our families, preserve it and pass it on to future generations.
