The 10th jubilee student olympiad in algebra, dedicated to the memory of Professor V.M. Usenko, was held at the Institute of Physics, Mathematics and Information Technologies.
On May 20, the 10th anniversary student algebraic olympiad dedicated to the memory of the outstanding Ukrainian algebraist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Vitalii Mykhailovych Usenko was held at the Educational and Research Institute of Physics, Mathematics and Information Technologies with the help of the popular online communications service Zoom. The scientist worked at our university from 2001 to 2006 and during this period made a significant contribution to the development of algebra in the Luhansk region and Ukraine. On the initiative of Professor V.M. Usenko and with the support of the university administration, in 2002, the world famous mathematical journal “Algebra and Discrete Mathematics” was organized, which has been included in the international scientometric database Scopus since 2012, and since 2016 – in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (Web of Science) database.
At the beginning of the event, the head of the Department, Professor Anatolii Zhuchok, addressed the students with a welcoming speech. He briefly spoke about the state of modern algebra in science and the main directions of its development. The chairman of the jury, Professor Yurii Zhuchok, introduced the organizational issues and the terms of the assignments to the students. Usually the Algebra Olympiad is held for students of mathematical specialties and takes place in one round. The problems offered to the students were of a general algebraic nature and belonged to such classical branches of mathematics as number theory, linear algebra, general algebra and the theory of semigroups.
The winner of the Olympiad was the second-year student majoring in “Secondary Education (Mathematics. Physics)” Konstiantyn Kiselov. The first-year students of the Master’s degree program “Secondary Education (Mathematics)” Anna Krivushina and Yulia Liguta shared the second place. The first-year student majoring in “Secondary Education (Mathematics)” Oleksandr Malinskyi took the third place.
Congratulations to the winners and wish all the participants continued success!
