The Global Research Identifier Database (GRID) from Digital Science assigns each institution a unique identifier, and each record also contains additional metadata about the institution: type, year of foundation, name variations, acronyms, geolocation, website links, and other permanent identifiers.
You can add an institution to the GRID register through the Help & Support form – the Suggest an Institute button.
Another promising registry, the Research Organization Registry (ROR), has begun work on GRID data and is assigning its own identifiers to institutions.
