LTSNU in the Webometrics World Ranking
28.1.2021
Webometrics has released a ranking of world universities in terms of their presence on the global Internet as of January 2021.
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is one of the most authoritative rankings in the international educational environment. It represents over 12,000 universities and educational institutions from around the world. 316 Ukrainian universitites, including LuhanskTaras Shevchenko National University, received their places in the ranking.
According to the ranking, LTSNU took 36th place among domestic HEIs, 405th place – among higher educational institutions in Central and Eastern Europe, and 1369th place in the European ranking. In addition, our university took 3265th position in the continental ranking, and 4624th one in the world ranking.
Recall that the Webometrics World Universities Ranking has been compiled by Cybermetrics Lab (Spain) since 2004 and is published twice a year (in January and July). It was initiated to encourage better representation of academic and research institutions on the Internet and to stimulate free access to scientific information and cultural achievements of universities. The authors of the ranking consider the web presence to be a key factor for the HEIs. The methodology emphasizes that the ranking aims to motivate both the HEI and scientists to a web presence.
The ranking is based on an analysis of the official websites of educational institutions, therefore, the ranking includes only those universities that have their own independent web domain.
The ranking analyzes not the educational activities of the university as a whole, but the presentation of HEIs on the global Internet, which is determined according to a special methodology developed in accordance with the Berlin Principles on Ranking of Higher Education Institutions, defined by UNESCO.
In the process of compiling the Webometrics Ranking of World’s Universities, developers take into account the number of pages on sites in the main domain of the institution (including subdomains and directories), which are indexed by the Google search engine; the number of citations of works by the top 110 authors of the institution (the top ten most cited authors are excluded) in Google Scholar; the number of publications of university scientists in international scientific journals included in the top 10% of the most cited in 26 fields of science according to the Scimago ranking (for the five-year period 2015‒2019). Thus, the content and informational component of the website of the educational institution is assessed. Website traffic and design are not taken into account.
