A word about Volodymyr Lobas…

The Institute of History, International Relations and Socio-Political Sciences continues to replenish the section “History Faculty in Photos”.
Dear friends! We continue to present to your attention our new project, timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of our native Alma Mater: “History Faculty in Photographs”. The dynamic history of the Institute of History, International Relations and Socio-Political Sciences as one of the leading structural divisions of our university is rich in various important events for us. The old, yellowed photos reflect the “History Faculty’s” successes in various spheres. We, descendants, are watched by our famous teachers – they are still young and full of hopes for the future. Someone will recognize themselves in the photo – the first lectures and seminars, scientific conferences, concerts, archaeological expeditions. All this is the glorious history of the “legendary” “History Faculty”.
An outstanding teacher and scientist of our institute was Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Volodymyr Lobas, who since 1964 worked at the Department of Philosophy and Sociology.
The evidence of the outstanding educational and scientific activity of Volodymyr Khomych is reflected in the biographical article of Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor Ilia Kononov, timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of his teacher and scientific mentor. We suggest that you read some of its excerpts:
“Volodymyr Khomych was born in the village of Pustovity of the then Ulanovsky, now the Khmelnytskyi district of the Vinnitsa region during the hard times of war. Because of this, his birthday was registered on January 5, 1942, and under this date it appears in all official documents. First he entered the History Department of the Taras Shevchenko State University of Kyiv. Subsequently, at the same university he moved to the Faculty of Philosophy. After graduation, he was assigned to the Department of Philosophy of the Voroshilovgrad State Pedagogical Institute named after Taras Shevchenko. The then Luhansk became the second small homeland for Volodymyr Khomych. He worked at our department for 23 years, going from assistant to professor. The Voroshilovgrad period of his life was extremely eventful. The core of scientific research for the scientist was the problems of sign systems, the ratio of natural and artificial languages. Dealing with this issue, Professor Lobas discovered the paradox of communication, which explains the various manifestations of the hermeneutic circle. He demonstrated that purely logical tools are not enough for the analysis of sign systems. Language is one of the dimensions of sociality, and therefore, even its logical problems ultimately require a sociological explanation. For many years Volodymyr Khomych taught at our department a course on historical materialism, filling it with modern sociological content. So, we can consider him one of the founders of the sociological school at our university. Since 1987 Volodymyr Lobas has lived and worked in Kyiv, but he never broke off contact with our department, continuing to work as a Professor at it. He was a scientific adviser in the preparation of candidate dissertations in O. B. Levchenkova, A. V. Chanturia, Yu. S. Nuzhnaya and many others.”
Volodymyr Khomych Lobas passed away on May 8, 2012. He was an outstanding teacher at our institute, and his memory will be kept as long as there are his students.
