The Faculty of Narural Sciences is one of the oldest structural subdivisions of our university, the pages of its history reflect the development of the native Alma Mater.
The history of higher education in our region dates back to March 1, 1921, when Donetsk higher pedagogical provincial courses were opened – the first higher educational institution of Donbas, located in the city of Luhansk. Two years later, these courses were reorganized into the Donetsk Institute of Public Education (DIPE), in the structure of which there were chemical and natural classrooms on the basis of which the training of specialists in the natural direction began. Therefore, 1923 is considered the year of foundation of the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
Over the course of 20 years, specialties of the natural direction were formed: in 1927-1929, on the basis of the Faculty of Social Education, the Faculty of Vocational Education was created, where a chemical and an agrobiological department were opened, in 1928 a biological department was opened. In 1932, on the basis of the chemical and agrobiological departments, the Agrobiological Faculty was created, and in 1933 – the Geographical Faculty was founded.
In 1934, Donetsk Institute of People’s Education was reorganized into the Luhansk State Pedagogical Institute (LSPI), in the structure of which the Agrobiological Faculty was reorganized into a Chemistry Faculty, and in 1936 – Natural Science and Chemistry Faculty.
During 1941-1943. the Faculty as part of the Institute survived two evacuations, and from the fall of 1943 upon its return, a new stage of its restoration and development began.
In 1951, on the basis of two faculties – Geographical and Natural Science and Chemistry – the Natural-Geographical Faculty was created.
The rapid development of the university, significant changes in its structure allowed it to receive the status of Luhansk State Pedagogical University (LSPU) in 1998, in 2003 – the status of national, and in 2008 – the status of a classical university. Since that time, our university is called the State Institution “Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University”.
With the change in the status of the university and as a result of the opening of new specialties, a certain reorganization of the structure of the faculty takes place – new departments are formed and a number of existing departments are merged. In this regard, in 2009 the name of the Faculty was changed to the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
