Prize-winners of the XXVII Summer Olympic Games in Sydney

The section “Famous Athletes of the Institute of Physical Education and Sports”, which is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University, continues. 

At the XXVII Summer Olympic Games in Sydney-2000, our students won 2 silver and 1 bronze medals.

Iryna Viktorivna Yanovych – Honored Master of Sports of Ukraine in cycling, received a bronze medal in cycling.

Sports achivments:

  • 1996 – silver medalist of the European Championship
  • 1997 – European champion
  • 1998 – bronze medalist of the European Championship
  • 2000 – Olympic bronze medalist
  • 2003 – World Cup Winner

Iryna started cycling at the age of 15 in the city of Kreminna. At first, she trained under the leadership of Mykola Koshelev, then the honored coach of Ukraine Serhii Bazin became the coach of the athlete, under whose leadership Iryna received high World sports achievements.

Today Iryna Yanovych is a senior lecturer at the Department of Human Health and Physical Education at the Volodymyr Dal East Ukrainian National University.

Our student David Saldadze performed well at the Olympics. He received a silver Olympic medal in Greco-Roman wrestling in the weight category up to 97 kg, playing for the national team of Ukraine.

David Saldadze – bronze medalist of the World Championship (1998), bronze medalist of the European Championships (2002-2003), bronze medalist of the Asian Games (2010). He was awarded with the Order of Merit, 3rd degree.

Ruslan Mezentsev was a member of the national team of Ukraine in sports gymnastics, which received silver medals at the Olympics. He is Honored Master of Sports of Ukraine, bronze medalist of European and World Championships (2001) in team events, champion and winner of the Ukrainian Cup (2002, 2003). He was awarded with the Order of Merit, 3rd degree.
