Institute of Economics and Business: 20 years of quality education

On the eve of the 100th anniversary of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University, we begin a series of publications about the history of the Institute of Economics and Business, its outstanding teachers and graduates.

Almost twenty years have passed since the institute was founded. Thanks to the numerous petitions of the university leadership, by the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dated April 6, 2001, on the basis of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko State Pedagogical University, a new structural subdivision was created – the INSTITUTE OF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS.

A prerequisite for the creation of the Institute of Economics and Business was the licensing of a new direction for mathematics teachers at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty. In particular, in 1999, thanks to the initiative and support of the Rector of Luhansk State Pedagogical Institute Vitalii Semenovych Kurylo, the qualification “Teacher of the Basics of Economics” was opened in the direction of training “Mathematics”. Since then, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics began to develop rapidly.

In 1999, the dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics became the Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Mathematics – Valerii Petrovych Khmel. With his participation and with significant support from of administration in 1999, three specialties were licensed: Informatics, Design and Statistics (with a specialization in Mathematical Economics).

In 2000, there was the next stage – licensing of two new specialties: “Management of Organizations” and “Finance”. And in 2001, in accordance with the needs of the labor market for new specialists, one of the first institutes within Luhansk State Pedagogical University, the Institute of Economics and Business was created.

At that time, the Institute of Economics and Business had nine departments:

– Department of Pedagogy;

– Department of General Mathematics and Teaching Methods;

– Department of Mathematical Analysis and Statistics;

– Department of Engineering and Pedagogical Disciplines;

– Department of Physics;

– Department of Enterprise Economics;

– Department of Management;

– Department of Computer Science;

– Department of Finance.

In 2004, the Institute is licensed for a magistracy and acquires the fourth level of accreditation in all open specialties. From 2004 to 2008, three departments and specialties were opened:

– Department of Marketing;

– Department of Design;

– Department of Economic Informatics.

The specialties of the Institute are gaining great popularity, the contingent is growing rapidly. The departments are becoming more experienced, and the quality staff is becoming more qualified.

In 2005, the Institute of Economics and Business has three scientific departments: a branch of the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a branch of the Galkin Donetsk Institute of Physics and Technology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a branch of the Institute of Industrial Economics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

In 2008, the Institute of Economics and Business has fourteen departments and twelve specialties. About 3000 students study here. In the same year, to improve the quality of the educational process, the Institute created educational and methodological centers. And in the same year, to improve the quality of training of specialists, the institute is divided into three structural divisions:

– Institute of Economics and Business;

– Institute of Information Technologies;

– Institute of Trade, Service Technology and Tourism.

Thus, the Institute of Economics and Business became the base for two new divisions of the university.

Since that time, our division has become a center for training specialists in economic professions: economists, financiers, statisticians, managers, marketers and successful entrepreneurs.

In 2014, the institute, like the entire university, was forced to leave their native walls and continue the educational activities in the new city.

Despite the difficulties, lack of material, technical and scientific base, the teachers of our institute remained loyal to Ukraine and their native Alma Mater.

Now in the educational and scientific Institute of Economics and Business, three departments operate: the Department of Management, the Department of Economics, Marketing and Entrepreneurship, as well as the Department of Finance, Accounting and Banking.

The teachers of each department are active participants in many scientific events, international and All-Ukrainian conferences, Olympiads and competitions.

So, at the Department of Management, the preparation and updating of educational and methodological literature, the search for new forms and methods of activating the educational process is systematically carried out. During the period of its existence, the department trained six candidates of sciences, and three doctors of sciences received the title of professor. During 2014-2020, 1 Ph.D. thesis was defended at the Department.

The scientific activity of the Department of Finance, Accounting and Banking is aimed at obtaining new knowledge in the field of financial planning, accounting, banking and insurance activities. During 2014-2020, the teachers of the Department defended four Ph.D. theses. Scientists are the authors of monographs, articles in domestic and foreign publications, in journals with an impact factor, and textbooks.

On the basis of the Department of Economics, Marketing and Entrepreneurship, a branch of the Institute of Industrial Economics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Research Center “National Business Cultures of Poland and Ukraine”, the Communication and Consulting Center “MecyCorps – LTSNU” were created. Since September 2004, the Department has been publishing the journal “Economic Bulletin of Donbas”. It is included in the list of scientific specialized publications in which the results of scientific research of applicants for the scientific degree of doctor and candidate of sciences can be published.

Social and humanitarian work is an important area of ​​the Institute’s activities. So, during the last academic year, our students have joined many university events, in particular, the holiday of the Defenders of Ukraine, various concerts, fairs and exhibitions.

The volleyball team of girls has repeatedly won university competitions, and our students Iryna Pliasulia and Daria Zadorozhna are the winners of regional and All-Ukrainian competitions.

It has become a good tradition of the institute to hold a festival of initiation into students for freshmen, the competition “Hello, We are Looking for Talents”, the celebration of Maslenitsa.

The opening of the Youth Business Club was a special event last year. Students have the opportunity to network with successful entrepreneurs, gain hands-on experience in running a business and overcoming problems that arise.

The Educational and Research Institute of Economics and Business continues to be active. There are still a number of new achievements and victories ahead, which will become possible thanks to the well-coordinated work of a powerful team of scientists and students.
