Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language
9.11.2020
Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University celebrates the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language.
The Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language was founded more than 20 years ago. The purpose of the celebration is to consolidate the Ukrainian society.
At the beginning of November, a public holiday is celebrated – the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language. On this day, thematic contests and festive events are held, which aim to unite Ukrainians around their native word.
We will tell you in detail why the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language was founded.
The Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language is a public holiday that is celebrated annually in Ukraine on November 9. It was launched on November 9, 1997 by Presidential Decree No. 1241/97 “On the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language” in support of “initiatives of public organizations and taking into account the important role of the Ukrainian language in the consolidation of Ukrainian society.”
According to the Orthodox calendar, the memory of the Monk Nestor the chronicler is honored on this day. He was a writer-hagiographer, the founder of Old Russian historiography, the first historian of Kievan Rus, a thinker, a scientist, and a monk of the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery.
Researchers believe that the written Ukrainian language begins with the Monk Nestor the Chronicler. He is the author of the most ancient monument of Ukrainian historiography and literature – “The Tale of Bygone Years”, which was completed around 1113. This work is compiled on the basis of contemporary events and archival chronicles, folk legends and stories.
Traditionally on this day people:
- lay flowers at the monument to Nestor the chronicler;
- celebrate the best popularizers of the Ukrainian word;
- encourage publishing houses that publish literature in the Ukrainian language;
- the International Competition of Experts of the Ukrainian Language starts – the competition is held with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the League of Ukrainian Patrons. The annual number of participants is more than 5 million from 20 countries of the world.
