Family of champions

The Educational and Research Institute of Physical Education and Sports continues to fill the section “Famous athletes of the Educational and Research Institute of Physical Education and Sports”.

This time in the section “Retro-Sport” are Olympic champions, married couple Viktor and Olha Bryzgina.

At the XXIV Olympic Games in Seoul (Korea) 1988 Olha Bryzgina won two gold medals in the 400 meter race, and then in the relay team (4/400 meters). The USSR national team set a new world record: 3 min. 15, 17 sec. In the final, the athletes of the USSR national team withstood the fiercest competition from the US national team.

Olha Bryzgina, who ran in the last stage, was ahead of the American athlete Florence Griffith Joyner. It was thanks to Olha that the national team won gold in the relay.

Olha Bryzgina, Honored Master of Sports, winner of the European Cup (1985) as part of the USSR national team, silver medalist of the European Championship (1986) in the 400 m race, World Champion (in 1987) in the 400 m race and the silver medalist of the World Championship in the 4×400 metres relay. The sportswoman set two personal records: 200 m – 22.44 s (1985) and 400 m – 48.27 s. (1985).

At the 24th Summer Olympic Games in Seoul (1988), Viktor Bryzgin, as part of the USSR national team, won a gold medal in the 4×100 metres relay.

Viktor Bryzgin – Honored Master of Sports, bronze medalist of the World Championship (1983) in the 4×100 metres relay, European Champion (1986), in the 4×100 metres relay as part of the USSR national team, silver medalist of the World Championship (1987).

Olha and Viktor Bryzgin have two daughters: Yelyzaveta and Anastasia, who have been involved in athletics since childhood. They began their sports careers with coach Volodymyr Fedorets, who coached their parents. We will tell about their sporting achievements in a further sporting section.
